The Interim Government of Nepal established in 2025 is headed by Sushila Karki. It was formed on 12 September 2025 following the resignation of Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli amid widespread political unrest in the country. Karki, the first woman to serve as the Chief Justice of Nepal, was appointed interim Prime Minister to oversee the transition until the next general elections.
Nepal faced a significant political crisis fueled by popular dissatisfaction with accusations of corruption and governance under Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli. Large-scale protests, prominently led by young activists, demanded anti-corruption measures and reform of government structures. These events culminated in the dissolution of the second federal parliament and Oli's subsequent resignation. In response, President Ram Chandra Poudel appointed Sushila Karki as interim Prime Minister to guide the nation through this period of transition. [1] [2]
The interim government was formed after consultations involving political stakeholders, protest leaders, and the Nepalese Army. Sushila Karki was selected for her legal expertise and widely regarded impartiality. Her appointment was welcomed by multiple factions across the political spectrum and the general public. [3]
The interim government is charged with stabilizing the political environment, addressing citizen grievances, ensuring governance continuity, and organizing free and fair elections. [4] [5]
