The International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (IAML) [note 1] is an organisation of libraries with music departments, music conservatory libraries, radio and orchestra archives, university institutes, music documentation centers, music publishers, and music dealers that fosters international cooperation and promotes music bibliography and music library science. [1] It was founded in Paris in 1951 [2] and its three official languages are English, German, and French.

History

IAML was founded after World War II to "promote international cooperation and standardization in such matters as cataloging, standards of service, personnel training and the exchange of materials between libraries." [3] The founding of IAML was a three-year process from 1949 to 1951. It was part of the United Nations' mission to promote world peace. The founding conferences were held in Basel and Florence in 1949, in Lüneburg in 1950, and in Paris in 1951, the last one conducted by UNESCO. [4]

The Accademia Nazionale Luigi Cherubini celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1949, an event that brought around 60 music librarians, musicologists, and museum professionals from twelve countries to Florence. [5] This was the first meeting of music librarians from around the world; plans for a separate organization had been discussed since the founding of the International Musicological Society in 1927, but the Second World War prevented anything from taking shape. [6] The war had caused heavy losses at many libraries, and international cooperation was of utmost importance.

The goals of the Florence conference included updating the status and locations of the musical sources described in Robert Eitner's Biographisch-Bibliographisches Quellen-Lexikon der Musiker und Musikgelehrten der christlichen Zeitrechnung bis zur Mitte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts (Leipzig, 1900–1904), establishing a central office in each country responsible for microfilming musical sources from before 1800, and addressing issues related to music cataloging. [5] The first goal was realized in 1952 with the founding of the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales.

In 1951, IAML had 120 participants from 23 countries, by 1952, their membership had grown to 230. [7] Membership grew to about 1,100 members in 39 countries in 1969 [8] and 1,850 members in 40 countries in 1991, [1] with national branches in 26 countries as of 2017.

IAML has professional sections, subject sections, study group, and project groups that focus on particular aspects of music librarianship and documentation. Two professional organizations, the International Association of Music Information Centres and the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives began as IAML groups but later formed their own organizations. [3]

Structure

The IAML board of directors is made up of the president, past president, secretary general, treasurer, and vice presidents. [9] The board governs IAML together with a Council (which includes representatives from national branches and professional sections) and the General Assembly.

IAML is affiliated with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the International Music Council, and the International Musicological Society (IMS). [9]

Activities

IAML holds annual conferences and has implemented four main programmes, together known as the "R projects" of musicology: Répertoire international des sources musicales (RISM), Répertoire international de littérature musicale (RILM), Répertoire international d'iconographie musicale (RIdIM) and Répertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM). IAML publishes a journal, ''Fontes Artis Musicae'', with articles on music librarianship and bibliography as well as reports on IAML conferences and on the progress of the "R projects". [1]

Annual conferences

IAML holds annual meetings in different locations around the world. Occasionally, meetings are held jointly with other professional organizations. After the founding meetings held from 1949 to 1951, annual meetings commenced in 1954. [5]

Répertoire international des sources musicales

RISM was founded in 1953 and deals with the bibliography of sources in music and music literature from Greek antiquity up to 1800.

Répertoire international de littérature musicale

RILM, founded in 1966, covers music literature through two online databases: RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, which extends from 1967 to the present, and RILM Retrospective Abstracts of Music Literature (RILM Retro), which covers literature from before 1967.

Répertoire international d'iconographie musicale

RIdIM, founded in 1971, deals with visual materials relating to music.

Répertoire international de la presse musicale

RIPM, founded in 1980, preserves, reconstructs, and makes available music periodicals originally published from ca. 1760 to 1966. By 2014, RIPM has indexed 215 music periodicals, published 306 printed volumes and a database of more than 726,000 annotated citations. Furthermore, through the RIPM Online Archive and e-Library, RIPM has made available 166 music journals in full-text.

Its mission is "to make this knowledge accessible to research and performance communities worldwide….to include the music scholarship of all countries, in all languages, and across all disciplinary and cultural boundaries, thereby fostering research in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences." Central to RILM's work and mission is the international bibliography of scholarship relating to all facets of music research.

The Répertoire International des Sources Musicales is an international non-profit organization, founded in Paris in 1952, with the aim of comprehensively documenting extant historical sources of music all over the world. It is the largest organization of its kind and the only entity operating globally to document written musical sources. RISM is one of the four bibliographic projects sponsored by the International Musicological Society and the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres, the others being Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale, Répertoire international d'iconographie musicale, and Répertoire international de la presse musicale.

Music librarianship is the area of librarianship that pertains to music collections and their development, cataloging, preservation and maintenance, as well as reference issues connected with musical works and music literature. Music librarians often have degrees in both music and librarianship. Music librarians deal with standard librarianship duties such as cataloging and reference, which become more complicated when music scores and recordings are involved. Therefore, music librarians generally read music and have at least a basic understanding of both music theory and music history to aid in their duties.

Ensemble librarianship is an area of music librarianship which specializes in serving the needs of musical ensembles, including symphony and chamber orchestras, opera houses, ballet companies, wind ensembles and educational institutions. Ensemble librarians acquire printed music and prepare it for performance.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bibliography of Music Literature</span> International bibliography of literature on music

The Bibliography of Music Literature is an international bibliography of literature on music. It considers all kind of music and includes both current and older literature. Since 1968, the BMS editorial staff has also been working as the German committee for the Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM). The bibliography includes monographs, master’s theses and doctoral dissertations, articles and reviews from journals, Festschriften, conference proceedings, yearbooks, anthologies, and essays from critical reports. It contains printed media as well as online resources, data media, sound recordings, audiovisual media, and microforms. Each record provides the title in the original language, full bibliographic data, a keyword index, and mostly an abstract. Currently, BMS online has more than 315,000 records of literature on music. It is supplemented by the OLC-SSG Musicology, which incorporates the contents of some more 150 music journals from 1993 onward. BMS online participates actively on Virtual Library of Musicology (ViFaMusik), the central gateway for music and musicology in Germany.

Répertoire international de la presse musicale, commonly known as RIPM, provides access to music periodical literature published between 1750 and 1966 through an annotated index, RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals, and two full-text publication series, RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals with Full Text and RIPM Preservation Series. RIPM also provides access to full-text jazz publications from 1914 to the 2000s through RIPM Jazz Periodicals.

The International Musicological Society (IMS) is a membership-based organisation for musicology at the international level, with headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. It seeks the advancement of musicological research through international cooperation.

Jean-Michel Nectoux is a French musicologist, particularly noted as an expert on the life and music of Gabriel Fauré. He has published many books on Fauré and other French composers, and has been responsible for major exhibitions in Paris.

The Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres is a national association that represents music librarians across Canada. Members work in organizations that support musical activities in Canada, including libraries, archives, conservatories, and universities. The organization aims to support all aspects of music librarianship in Canada, including research and scholarship, and to cooperate with other national and international organizations concerned with music.

Lionel Roy McColvin (1896–1976), commonly referred to as Lionel McColvin, was a British librarian. He has been described as "the dominant figure in British public librarianship" in the mid-20th century and a "world leader" in the profession of librarianship. Through his membership of the Library Association and several international library committees he worked constantly to improve the "status of librarianship" and its "standards of service".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Harald Heckmann</span> German musicologist (1924–2023)

Harald Heckmann was a German musicologist who focused on source documentation, particularly supported by electronic data processing, and music iconography. Besides teaching at the Musikhochschule Freiburg, he established in 1954 and led until 1971 the German Archive for the History of Music, and afterwards was chairman of the German Broadcasting Archive. He held leading positions of international organisations such as the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (IAML), Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM), and Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM).

RILM Music Encyclopedias(RME) is an electronic collection of music reference works from 1775 to the present from Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale. RME expands every year by three to five titles.

RIPM Jazz Periodicals is a searchable database of full-text, mostly out-of-print, rare jazz periodicals, published by Répertoire international de la presse musicale, commonly known as RIPM. Updated annually with new full-text journals including full citations, RIPM Jazz Periodicals currently contains 119 American (U.S.) jazz journals and magazines published from 1914 to 2010. The Association of German Librarians, also known by its German initialism VDB, represents the professional interests of academic librarians and works to promote academic books and libraries. It was founded in 1900, re-founded in 1948 (Munich) and is the oldest librarian association in Germany. The association has more than 1753 members (2020) who are employed in academic library service - or are being trained for it - or who are close to and represent the goals of the association. The office rotates with the respective board and, with the election of library director Anke Berghaus-Sprengel, has been located in Halle (Saale) at the University and State Library of Saxony-Anhalt since August 1, 2021.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lenore Coral</span> American musicologist, ethnomusicologist and administrator

Lenore Coral (1939–2005) was an American musicologist and music librarian. She is known for activities with the Music Library Association (MLA) whree sheserved as president from 1987 through 1989, and specifically with her work establishing the International Standard Music Number (ISMN). Coral was born on January 30, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan. She attended the University of Chicago and King's College London, receiving her PhD in 1974. She worked at several university libraries including University of California, Irvine, the Mills Music Library at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and the Sidney Cox Library for Music and Dance at Cornell University. While at Cornell, Coral founded and became director of the Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale, United States Office.
