The International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) is an association of university chief executives from higher education institutions around the world. [1] The IAUP was founded in 1964 in Oxford. [2] Membership is limited to those individuals who serve as presidents, rectors or vice-chancellors at regionally accredited colleges or universities. [1]

The primary purpose is to strengthen the international mission and quality of education of higher education institutions around the world. [3]

Overview

It is a non-governmental organization holding the highest (ECOSOC) consultation rights at the United Nations and formal consultation rights with UNESCO. [1] It is headquartered in the United Nations Plaza in New York City. [4] IAUP counts about 120 universities' representatives from 21 countries. [5]

IAUP is a founding member of the World University Consortium, a major initiative of the World Academy of Art and Science to design a global system of higher education attuned to emerging opportunities and challenges.

The association hosts a gathering of chief executive officers from universities around the world every three years. [6]

History

The IAUP was founded in 1964 by university leaders from the United States, South Korea, Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Liberia. [1] [7] [8] [9] [10] The inaugural conference took place in June 1965 in Oxford, England. [7]

Mission

IAUP's mission includes providing a worldwide vision of higher education, sponsoring effective networking between university leaders, and promoting peace and international understanding through education. [11]

The IAUP partners with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education, [22] the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific, the World Academy of Art and Science, the European Universities Association, the International Association of Universities, the United Nations Department of Public Information, the World Bank Research Alliance for Development, the UNESCO, the Union of Mediterranean Universities, and Universities Australia. Pornchai Mongkhonvanit is the president of Siam University and the President Emeritus of the International Association of University Presidents. Concurrently, he is also the chair person of the advisory board of the Association of Universities in Asia and the Pacific, as well as a member of the administrative board of the International Association of Universities. He is also a former president of the Association of Private Higher Education Institutions of Thailand and former president of the Thailand chapter of Phi Delta Kappa honors society.

In accordance with the the United Nations General Assembly proclamation of the International Year of Languages in 2008, the Arabic Language International Council was established by the Arab universities association. The organization was formed within the framework of the UN's effort to promote Unity in diversity, and also in recognition of the UN's push for multilingualism as a means of promoting, protecting and preserving the diversity of languages and cultures globally, particularly in the paramount importance attributed to the quality of the organization's six official languages.

The Association of the Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) is a platform and voices of universities in Asia and the Pacific and around the world. AUAP is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), holding the highest formal consultative status with UNESCO. Its primary purpose is to be the main platform for interaction and collaboration between members, and to be the effective voice of universities in Asia and the Pacific region. AUAP organizes regular conferences and workshops for higher education leaders and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region to discuss important issues and the challenges facing higher education. The association promotes and helps enhance mutually beneficial cooperation among educational institutions, and is dedicated to render such services to its member institutions.

The Three University Missions Moscow International University Ranking is a global ranking of academic universities developed by the Russian Association of Rating Makers, with the participation of the international association IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence. The ranking evaluates the quality of education and scientific work, and for the very first time in international practice, a university's contribution to society, as well — a criterion, rarely assessed by other academic rankings. Another unique feature of the ranking is the consideration of the “Number of alumni with an individual article about them on Wikipedia”.
