International Orthodontic Congress is a meeting held every five years where world's leading Orthodontists and allied professionals come together to discuss Orthodontic related topics. The first meeting was held in 1926 in New York City and has had 8 meetings happen in its 90-year history. This is an official meeting of World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO). [1]

World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) was formed at the 4th International Orthodontic Congress (IOC) in San Francisco by 69 affiliated organizations on May 15, 1995, and now has over 10,000 WFO fellows and 114 affiliated organizations. It is based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA

History

1st International Orthodontic Congress was held in 1926 in New York City. It was the first worldwide congress ever held by a dental speciality at that time. Dr. William Fisher was the first President of the International Orthodontic Congress (IOC). He was also the President of American Society of Orthodontists (ASO). The ASO was celebrating its 25th anniversary of its founding in 1901. At that time, the International Congress consisted of fifteen orthodontic societies.

New York City Largest city in the United States

2nd International Orthodontic Congress was held in 1931 in London, England. Dr. J.H. Badcock was the President of 2nd International Congress, in addition to helming the Presidency of European Orthodontic Society (EOS) and British Society for Study of Orthodontics (BSSO).

London Capital of the United Kingdom

3rd International Orthodontic Congress was to be held in 1938 in Montreal, Canada. Due to the tensions of WWII and death of Dr. Fisher, the 3rd international congress did not take place in Montreal. For next three decades, due to Korean and Vietnam War, the organization of the Congress was further delayed. Eventually the 3rd IOC was held in 1973 in London. Dr. William J. Tulley was the President of 3rd IOC. Dr. B.F. Dewel then served as Vice-President of IOC.

Montreal is the most populous municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec and the second-most populous municipality in Canada. Originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary", it is named after Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city. 4th International Orthodontic Congress was held in 1995 in San Francisco, California. Dr. William H. DeKock organized the 4th IOC. During this meeting, World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) was created. The WFO acted as an accrediting body for orthodontic specialists throughout the world. After Dr. DeKock contacted many different Orthodontic societies around the world by sending them the bylawas of WFO. Ultimately 68 national and regional orthodontic societies signed the charter of World Federation of Orthodontics in San Francisco on May 15, 1995.

5th International Orthodontic Congress was held in Chicago, USA in 2000 along with the 100th session of the American Association of Orthodontists. 6th International Orthodontic Congress was held in Paris, France in 2005 along with Societe Francaise d’Orthopedie Dento-Faciale and Syndicate des Specialistes Francais en Orthopedie Dento-Faciale.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is the American professional association for orthodontists. Approximately 13,500 American orthodontists, about 95 percent, are members along with a few Canadian orthodontists. All orthodontists are dentists and may simultaneously hold membership in the American Dental Association. Its headquarters are in Creve Coeur, Missouri, near St. Louis.

7th International Orthodontic Congress was held in Sydney, Australia in 2010 and was sponsored by Australian Society of Orthodontists. 8th International Orthodontic Congress was held in London, England in 2015 and was hosted by the British Orthodontic Society. This year 20 year anniversary of WFO was also celebrated. 9th International Orthodontic Congress will be held in Yokohama, Japan in 2020. [2]

Indian Orthodontic Society is a professional association for orthodontists that was started in 1965 in Mumbai, India.

Dr. Martin Dewey (1881–1933) was an American orthodontist and a past president of the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association. Dewey represented the "New School" of Edward Angle in the great Extraction Debate of 1911 held in New York City.

Angle School of Orthodontia was the first school of Orthodontics in the world established by Edward Angle in 1899. The school taught its students Orthodontics over a period of 3–6 weeks. The school graduated 183 students until it closed in 1927. Among the graduates, 25 students became Presidents of American Association of Orthodontists, 11 students became head of Orthodontic Departments and three students became dental school Deans.

John Valentine Mershon was an American Orthodontist who graduated from Angle School of Orthodontia in 1908. He is the past President of American Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Mershon helped organize First International Orthodontic Congress in 1926 and served as its honorary president.

Birte Melsen is an orthodontist from Denmark. She was the past President of European Orthodontic Society in 2004 and has made significant contributions in the field of orthodontics with her research, publishing about 350 papers in scientific journals on topics related to Anchorage (orthodontics) and adult orthodontics.

Charles Augustus Hawley was an American Orthodontist who is known for developing the Hawley Retainer which is used in the field of Orthodontics. He attended Angle School of Orthodontia and graduated from there in 1905.

David L. Turpin is an American Orthodontist who was the Editor-in Chief for The Angle Orthodontist from 1988 to 1999 and American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from 1999 to 2010.

Lee W. Graber is an American Orthodontist who is the recipient of the Albert H. Ketcham Award in 2012. He also co-authored the textbook Orthodontics: Current Principles and Techniques along with his father Thomas M. Graber. He is a past president of World Federation of Orthodontists.

Thomas M. Graber was an American orthodontist known for his contributions to the field of orthodontics. Graber wrote 28 books on orthodontics and dental anatomy. He also wrote chapters in more than 20 books and over 175 published articles.

Frank A. Gough was an American Orthodontist who graduated from Angle School of Orthodontia. He was the first person to open an Orthodontic practice in the borough of Brooklyn.

Dr. Juri Kurol (1942–2011) was a Swedish orthodontist who was the president of the European Federation of Orthodontic Specialists Association until 2002. He is known for his contributions made in the field of orthodontics related to diagnosing and evaluating the eruption pattern of maxillary canines.

Dr. Samir Bishara was an Orthodontist from Egypt who received the highest honor from the World Federation of Orthodontists when they selected him to be the honorary fellow of the WFO.

Dr. Herbert A. Pullen was an American Orthodontist who was the graduate of the first class from Angle School of Orthodontia in 1900. Dr. Pullen is known to develop Pullen band-forming plier, band-removing plier and band seater.

George Northcroft was a British orthodontist who is known for his contributions in the formation of the British Orthodontic Society. The society was initially formed in 1907 as British Society for the Study of Orthodontics (BSSO) and the name later changed to British Orthodontic Society. He also played an important role in formation of the Dental Act of 1921 which made dentistry a profession in Great Britain.

Harold Chapman was a British orthodontist who was England's first exclusive orthodontic practitioner in 1921. He was also the President of the European Orthodontic Society and British Dental Association during his career.

Alfred Paul Rogers was an American Orthodontist who was considered as the Father of the Myofunctional Therapy in Orthodontics. He was the President of American Association of Orthodontists and American Academy of Dental Sciences. He was also instrumental in forming the American Board of Orthodontics.
