Intersindical Canaria is a left-wing nationalist trade union movement in the Canary Islands. [2] [3]

A trade union, also called a labour union or labor union (US), is an association of workers in a particular trade, industry, or company created for the purpose of securing improvement in pay, benefits, working conditions or social and political status through collective bargaining and working conditions through the increased bargaining power wielded by creation of a monopoly of the workers. The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members and negotiates labour contracts with employers. The most common purpose of these associations or unions is "maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment". This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies.

Canary Islands Archipelago in the Atlantic and autonomous community of Spain

The Canary Islands is a Spanish archipelago and the southernmost autonomous community of Spain located in the Atlantic Ocean, 100 kilometres west of Morocco at the closest point. The Canary Islands, which are also known informally as the Canaries, are among the outermost regions (OMR) of the European Union proper. It is also one of the eight regions with special consideration of historical nationality recognized as such by the Spanish Government. The Canary Islands belong to the African Plate like the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla, the two on the African mainland.

Intersindical Canaria was founded in 1994, through the merger of Confederación Autónoma Nacionalista de Canarias (CANC), Sindicato Obrero de Canarias (SOC), Confederación Canaria de Trabajadores (CCT), Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Enseñanza de Canarias (STEC, teachers' union) and Sindicato Canario de la Salud (health care union). The organization advocates independence of the Canary Islands from Spain. It has a socialist and feminist profile. [4] Intersindical Canaria joined the World Federation of Trade Unions in the period of 2006-2010. [5]

World Federation of Trade Unions international organization

The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) was established in 1945 to replace the International Federation of Trade Unions. Its mission was to bring together trade unions across the world in a single international organization, much like the United Nations. After a number of Western trade unions left it in 1949, as a result of disputes over support for the Marshall Plan, to form the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, the WFTU was made up primarily of unions affiliated with or sympathetic to communist parties. In the context of the Cold War, the WFTU was often portrayed as a Soviet front organization. A number of those unions, including those from Yugoslavia and China, left later when their governments had ideological differences with the Soviet Union.

The organization held its fourth congress in La Laguna in October 2009. [6] In 2017 Aisha Hernández, a member of the union, was jailed after an altercation with the police when he made a graffiti that read "75% youth unemployment". The case has been very controversial. [7] [8] [9]

2011 Canarian regional election

All 60 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The election was held simultaneously with regional elections in twelve other autonomous communities and local elections all throughout Spain.

Sindicato Obrero Canario was a nationalist trade union movement in the Canary Islands. It was founded as an underground movement in 1976, under the leadership of the Canarian Communist Party (Provisional). The union was legalized in 1977.

Confederación Xeral de Traballadores Galegos-Intersindical Nacional

Confederación Xeral de Traballadores Galegos-Intersindical Nacional was a nationalist trade union centre in Galicia. CXTG-IN was founded in 1985, as a split from the Intersindical Nacional dos Traballadores Galegos (INTG). Fernando Acuña served as the general secretary of the organization. Politically the movement was close to Galician leftwing groups.
