The Intratec TEC-22 is a semi-automatic handgun chambered in .22 Long Rifle. [1] It was also marketed as the Scorpion and Sport-22. The TEC-22 operates using a straight blow-back action. [6]

The TEC-22 is constructed largely from molded plastic and stamped metal parts. The materials used, along with its extremely simple design allowed the gun to be made and marketed inexpensively. The TEC-22 is designed to use magazines and drums made for the popular Ruger 10/22 rifle. [7]

Design

The single-piece frame/receiver is molded from ABS plastic and largely unmachined with the exception of the bolt guides which the bottom of the bolt rides on. A stamped steel receiver cover rests over the top of the bolt, sandwiching it in place. The receiver cover hinges at the front of the frame and latches onto the rear of the bolt assembly. The bolt assembly consists of a cast steel bolt that rides on a spring and follower; a thin firing pin channel runs down the center of the bolt, allowing the stamped firing pin to be struck by the hammer and impact the cartridge at the front of the bolt. [8] Although the Tec-22 is compatible with 10/22 magazines, Intratec manufactured and sold their own brand of 15- and 30-round double stack magazines for the pistol.[ citation needed ]

A small, ambidextrous [6] switch on the frame actuates a trigger block safety. [5] A hinged door at the bottom of the grip provides a small storage compartment.

Over its production run, the TEC-22 suffered from various quality control issues. For example, some were recalled because they were firing automatic bursts. [9]

Variants

Original

The original TEC-22 variant featured a threaded barrel [5] [10] and a 30-round magazine. The barrel threading is 12–20 and allows a barrel extension or suppressor [10] to be attached. A small, knurled nut threads onto the barrel to protect the threading.[ citation needed ]

TEC-22TK

A small number of pistols were made with the Tec-Kote rust-resistant finish in 1988. Other than the finish, there is no difference between models. [2]

TEC-25

In 1986 a small number of the TEC-25 variant were made. The pistol was similar to the standard TEC-22, but was chambered in .25 ACP. [3] The TEC-25 is completely unrelated to the Intratec Protec-25 pistol.

Sport-22

The Sport-22 featured a non-threaded barrel and a 10-round rotary magazine [2] to comply with the now expired 1994 U.S. firearms legislation which forbade the sale of the original TEC-22 model. [11]

The Military Armament Corporation Model 10, officially abbreviated as "M10" or "M-10", and more commonly known as the MAC-10, is a compact, blowback operated machine pistol/submachine gun that was developed by Gordon B. Ingram in 1964. It is chambered in either .45 ACP or 9mm. A two-stage suppressor by Sionics was designed for the MAC-10, which not only abates the noise created, but makes it easier to control on full automatic.

TEC-9 Semi-automatic pistol

The Intratec TEC-9, TEC-DC9, KG-99 and AB-10 are a line of blowback-operated semi-automatic pistols. They were developed by Intratec, an American subsidiary of the Swedish firearms manufacturer Interdynamic AB. Introduced in 1984, the TEC-9 was made of inexpensive molded polymers and a mixture of stamped and milled steel parts. The simple design of the gun made it easy to repair and modify. The TEC-9 developed a negative reputation for its association with organized crime, street gangs and mass shootings in the 1990s, with it most notably being used during the 101 California Street shooting and the Columbine High School massacre. However, it was a commercial success, with over 250,000 being sold.

A magazine is an ammunition storage and feeding device for a repeating firearm, either integral within the gun or externally attached. The magazine functions by holding several cartridges within itself and sequentially pushing each one into a position where it may be readily loaded into the barrel chamber by the firearm's moving action. The detachable magazine is sometimes colloquially referred to as a "clip", although this is technically inaccurate since a clip is actually an accessory device used to help load ammunition into a magazine.

The Ruger 10/22 is a series of semi-automatic rifles produced by American firearm manufacturer Sturm, Ruger & Co., chambered for the .22 Long Rifle rimfire cartridge. It uses a patented 10-round rotary magazine, though higher capacity box magazines are also available. The standard carbine version of the Ruger 10/22 has been in production continuously since 1964, making it one of the most successful rimfire rifle designs in history, with numerous third party manufacturers making parts and accessories for upgrading and customization. The 10/22's aftermarket is so prolific that a complete 10/22 can be built without using any Ruger-made components.

Breechblock

A breechblock is the part of the firearm action that closes the breech of a breech loading weapon before or at the moment of firing. It seals the breech and contains the pressure generated by the ignited propellant. Retracting the breechblock allows the chamber to be loaded with a cartridge.

Blow forward Type of firearm action

Blow-forward is a firearm action where the propellant gas pressure and the friction of the bullet traveling down the bore drag the whole gun barrel forward to facilitate the opening of the breech. This forward barrel motion provides most of the energy required to eject a spent cartridge case and chamber a fresh round of ammunition, and contains a minimum of moving parts, and thus is more compact than other operating mechanisms of equal barrel length.
