"Introduction" is a song by American rock duo I Dont Know How But They Found Me. It appears as the opening track on their debut EP, 1981 Extended Play , released through Fearless Records on November 9, 2018. The song was written and produced by bassist and vocalist Dallon Weekes, and features narration by author Jim Merkel.
While growing up, Dallon Weekes listened to various audiobook cassettes produced by the company Books on Tape. He was inspired by the recordings' style, wanting to mimic it for his debut EP as part I Dont Know How But They Found Me. Author Jim Merkel was subsequently hired to narrate an introduction, with additional use of a mark tree to cue a pageturn. [1] Weekes used a simplistic synthesizer instrumental with a short progression for the track, transitioning it into "Choke" from the same EP. [2] With a duration of half of a minute, "Introduction" is the duo's shortest song. [3]
On November 9, 2018, it appeared as the opening track of 1981 Extended Play , published through Fearless Records. Since release, the song has not been performed live. [3] Anna Rose of Hysteria Magazine described the song as "absurdly wonderful", complimenting its whimsy. [4] Emily Swingle of Bittersweet Press lauded the comforting quality of "Introduction", additionally likening the quirky choice of parodying children's audiobooks to Weekes' time with the Brobecks. [5] Carolyn Martin of The Recorder noted the track's alignment with the duo's retro aesthetic, [6] while Glenn van den Bosch of Strife Mag praised the mysteriousness of its crackling as foreshadowing the EP's themes.
