Iranian applications are the combined superapps backed by the Iranian Islamic Republic regime, the apps offer communication platforms that function on the National Information Network, while being limited and censored by government. The apps receive robust government support and funding. [1] [2] The state offers some electronic government services exclusively through the apps. [3] [4]

Security

The apps were removed by Google Play Store Protect in 2022 after being tagged for spyware. [5] The apps have been criticized by security experts for lacking security measures and infrastructures such as E2EE encryptions. [6] The apps are interlinked through Message Exchange Center. [7] In 2017 the message apps were affected by critical outages. [8]

Timeline

In December 2024 the apps received 50 billion toman in additional government supported funding after Iranian government unblocked WhatsApp after 2.5 years. [9] [10]

The students education network, with acronym Shad That in addition to the abbreviation of the full name of the program, it refers to the word Shaad meaning happy, is a communication and educational software that was launched following the spread of the coronavirus due to the absence of students in schools in Iran. The software is owned by the Ministry of Education of Iran, and students, teachers and headmasters are the people who use this software.
