The Irish Film Archive is part of the Irish Film Institute (formed in 1943, incorporated in 1945) the body charged with the promotion and preservation of film culture in Ireland. [1]
The Archive collects, preserves and makes accessible Ireland's moving image heritage. It is the leading resource for students of Irish film and film history. Its collection includes 30,000 cans of film,15,000 tapes, the Tiernan MacBride reference library and over 30,000 stills, posters and documents. The collection reflects Irish film production for over a century, with material from 1897 to the present day held in climate controlled vaults in Dublin's cultural quarter, Temple Bar. [2] The collection incorporates fiction, features, public information films, amateur material, documentaries, newsreels, experimental film and animation. [3]
The Archive was originally formed as a department of the IFI in 1986, becoming formally established in 1992 when the Irish Film Institute building in Temple Bar was opened. [4] By the mid-2000s were almost full and a campaign was launched in November 2011 to fund a new archive facility. [5] The campaign sought to raise €300,000, and featured Irish actor Saoirse Ronan. [6] The Archive partnered with Maynooth University to develop a second archive ,building on the Maynooth campus and in 2018, the new facility was officially opened, [7] tripling the archive’s capacity. [8]
As part of the Irish Film Institute the Archive receives 25 percent of its funding from the Arts Council of Ireland. [9] The Archive has paid agreements with Screen Ireland and Coimisiún na Meán thus ensuring a comprehensive collection of state funded audiovisual production is centralised and preserved. [10] The Archive has also received project specific funding from both organisations, as well as the Heritage Council, the EU Commission and the Irish Research Council amongst others. [11]
Regular screenings of material from the collections are held at the Irish Film Institute and at other venues in Ireland and abroad. The Archive collections are exhibited nationally and internationally through the IFI’s Irish Film Programming Department. [12] Collections from the Archive are also made available to the public via the IFI Archive Player, which is an online viewing room that is free to use and available worldwide www.ifiplayer.ie. [13] It is a resource for those interested in Ireland's film heritage and is used regularly by academics, students, teachers, film-makers, researchers, film enthusiasts and the general public. [14]
The Archive is the only Irish member of The International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) [15] contributing to the FIAF book Tales from The Vaults in 2023. IFI Archive staff have been included as faculty in FIAF training initiatives and have presented at a number of FIAF Congresses. [16] In 2019 the IFI Irish Film Archive was awarded full accreditation by the Museum Standards Programme of Ireland (MSPI), an initiative run by the Irish Heritage Council. [17] The Head of the IFI Irish Archive is Kasandra O’Connell who has been in the position since 2000. [18]
The IFI Irish Film Archive holds one of the largest collections of film and film-related materials in Ireland. [19] Over 700 individuals or organisations have entrusted their films to its care. The collection numbers over 30,000 cans of film, 15,000 broadcast tapes, and an extensive collection of digital material. In addition to moving image collections, the Archive holds a large number of items in its Special Collections, i.e. artefacts posters, stills, and documents. The archive has a non-purchase acquisitions policy, and material is accepted from private sources, production companies and professional bodies. In addition to commercial output, the Archive acquires amateur material, once it falls within its acquisition policy. [20] The archive has formal preservation agreements with Screen Ireland, The Arts Council and Coimisuin na Mean thus ensuring a comprehensive collection of state funded production is centralised and preserved. [21]
The Archive has an active programme of restoration and has worked on a variety of key Irish titles including Guests of the Nation (1935), Beloved Enemy (1936), She Didn’t Say No (1958), This Other Eden (1959) [22] and the Isaac Eppel–produced Irish Destiny (1926) which was screened with a new score by Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin performed by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra at the National Concert Hall in Dublin. [23] In addition to this restoration work the Archive has partnered with filmmakers and cultural partners on large scale preservation projects such as the Irish Adverts Project, The Loopline Collections and The Irish Independence Collection. [24] [25] The IFI has made archival material available on DVD, including The O’Kalem Collection, Seoda (a collection of short films dating from 1948 to 1970), several GAA compilations and a collection of Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s early work. [26]
From 2016 with the launch of the IFI Archive Player access to the collections has largely been online. The IFI Archive player provides free, global access to a wide range of archival material and is available both as an online web player and as a variety of apps. [27]
The Archive has collaborated with a number of academic partners in recent years in order to undertake research and access projects. These include Maynooth University and University of East Anglia on the Women in Focus project, University College Cork and Kingston School of Art on the Make Film History Project, [28] Galway University on the Kalem Collection digitisation and repatriation project and Maynooth University and University of East Anglia on the Women In Focus project. [29]
In the last 10 years the Archive has embraced the use of digital technology for access and preservation. In 2014 with financial support from the Irish government digital infrastructure including a fibre optic network and high volume digital storage was installed. This was followed in 2015 by the launch of a Digital Preservation and Access Strategy which emphasised the use of digital technology not only to preserve content but also to make that content available to the public. [30] In 2016/7 the Archive acquired a 2K digital scanner followed by a 4K scanner thus allowing the archive to create preservation-quality digital files. [31] At this time the Archive also developed IFIScripts, a set of open source scripts created inhouse in order to automate preservation activities and improve efficiency for small archives that cannot afford large Digital Asset Management systems. [32] These open source tools are available to the public via the IFI’s Githib page and have won several international awards. [33]
Film preservation, or film restoration, describes a series of ongoing efforts among film historians, archivists, museums, cinematheques, and non-profit organizations to rescue decaying film stock and preserve the images they contain. In the widest sense, preservation assures that a movie will continue to exist in as close to its original form as possible.
The Moving Image Archive is a collection of Scottish film and video recordings at the National Library of Scotland, held at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, Scotland. There are over 46,000 items within the collection, and over 2,600 of these are publicly available online at the library's Moving Image Catalogue.
The Irish Film Institute, formerly the Irish Film Centre, is both an arthouse cinema and a national body that supports Irish film heritage. The IFI presents film festivals, retrospectives and curated seasons, along with independent, Irish and foreign language films overlooked by commercial multiplexes at its cinemas in the Temple Bar quarter of Dublin. It maintains an archive of Irish films and provides education in film culture.
The International Federation of Film Archives was founded in Paris in 1938 by the Cinémathèque Française, the Reichsfilmarchiv in Berlin, the British Film Institute and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
In conservation, library and archival science, preservation is a set of preventive conservation activities aimed at prolonging the life of a record, book, or object while making as few changes as possible. Preservation activities vary widely and may include monitoring the condition of items, maintaining the temperature and humidity in collection storage areas, writing a plan in case of emergencies, digitizing items, writing relevant metadata, and increasing accessibility. Preservation, in this definition, is practiced in a library or an archive by a conservator, librarian, archivist, or other professional when they perceive a collection or record is in need of maintenance.
Irish Destiny is a 1926 film made in the Irish Free State, directed by George Dewhurst and written by Isaac Eppel to mark the tenth anniversary of the Easter Rising. A cut version was released in Britain, entitled An Irish Mother.
The Digital Preservation Award is an international award sponsored by the Digital Preservation Coalition. The award 'recognises the many new initiatives being undertaken in the challenging field of digital preservation'. It was inaugurated in 2004 and was initially presented as part of the Institute of ConservationConservation Awards. Since 2012 the prize, which includes a trophy and a cheque, is presented independently. Awards ceremonies have taken place at the British Library, the British Museum and the Wellcome Trust.
BBC Archives are collections documenting the BBC's broadcasting history, including copies of television and radio broadcasts, internal documents, photographs, online content, sheet music, commercially available music, BBC products, press cuttings, artifacts and historic equipment. The original contents of the collections are permanently retained but are in the process of being digitised. Some collections are being uploaded to the BBC Archives section of the BBC Online website for visitors to view. The archive is one of the largest broadcast archives in the world, with over 15 million items.
The Korean Film Archive, or the Korean Federation of Film Archives, is the sole film archive in South Korea with nationwide coverage. It was founded in Seoul in 1974 as a non-profit organization. In 1976 KOFA joined the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) as an observer, and gained its full membership of FIAF in 1985.
The Association of European Cinematheques is an affiliation of 49 European national and regional film archives founded in 1991. Its role is to safeguard the European film heritage and make these rich audiovisual records collected and preserved by the various film archives accessible to the public. ACE is a regional branch of FIAF Fédération Internationale des Archives du Film / International Federation of Film Archives. ACE members are non-profit institutions committed to the FIAF Code of Ethics.
The conservation and restoration of time-based media art is the practice of preserving time-based works of art. Preserving time-based media is a complex undertaking within the field of conservation that requires an understanding of both physical and digital conservation methods. It is the job of the conservator to evaluate possible changes made to the artwork over time. These changes could include short, medium, and long-term effects caused by the environment, exhibition-design, technicians, preferences, or technological development. The approach to each work is determined through various conservation and preservation strategies, continuous education and training, and resources available from institutions and organization across the globe.
Radharc Films, also known as the Radharc Trust, is an Irish charity which oversees the film archive of the Radharc series of documentary programs. The organisation is based in Blackrock in Dublin, Ireland. The archive, overseen by the trust, includes a collection of over 400 topical and religious documentaries spanning over 30 years.
Community archives are archives created or accumulated, described, and/or preserved by individuals and community groups who desire to document their cultural heritage based on shared experiences, interests, and/or identities, sometimes without the traditional intervention of formally trained archivists, historians, and librarians. Instead, the engaged community members determine the scope and contents of the community archive, often with a focus on a significant shared event, such as the Ferguson unrest (2014). Community archives are created in response to needs defined by the members of a community, who may also exert control over how materials are used.
Data preservation is the act of conserving and maintaining both the safety and integrity of data. Preservation is done through formal activities that are governed by policies, regulations and strategies directed towards protecting and prolonging the existence and authenticity of data and its metadata. Data can be described as the elements or units in which knowledge and information is created, and metadata are the summarizing subsets of the elements of data; or the data about the data. The main goal of data preservation is to protect data from being lost or destroyed and to contribute to the reuse and progression of the data.
The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) is a digital repository for Ireland's humanities, social science and cultural heritage data. It was designed as an open access infrastructure that allows for interactive use and sustained growth. Three institutions, Royal Irish Academy (RIA), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), and Maynooth, currently manage the repository and implement its policies, guidelines and training. The Department of Education and Skills has primarily funded DRI since 2016 through the Higher Education Authority and the Irish Research Council. As of 2018, DRI is home to over 28,000 items.
The Indiana University Archives of Traditional Music holds over 100,000 individual audio and video recordings across over 3500 collections of field, broadcast, and commercial recordings. Its holdings are primarily focused on audiovisual recordings relating to research in the academic disciplines of ethnomusicology, folklore, anthropology, linguistics, and various area studies.
Unlocking Film Heritage (UFH) was one of the biggest film digitisation projects ever undertaken and it encompassed the BFI National Archive together with national and regional audiovisual archival institutions in United Kingdom. Between 2013–2017 around 10,000 titles, capturing 120 years of Great Britain on film, were digitised and made free-to-access in a variety of ways. Many archival clips can be watched for free online via BFI Player.
Film Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization, based in Mumbai, India, dedicated to film preservation, restoration and archiving of India’s film heritage.
