The Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber is a newspaper based in Vashon in the U.S. state of Washington. It covers local news, sports, business, and community events. [2] The Island Beachcomber publishes once a week on Wednesdays. [2] This newspaper is known for its tabloid-like character, [3] and it is owned by the Black Press Group. [4]

History

The Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber was founded in 1957 and still circulates. [5] In 1958, the Beachcomber purchased another paper, News-Record, merging the two papers. [6]

In May 2020 Kevin Opsahl, editor of the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber, was laid off after being furloughed in March 2020. The Beachcomber is now down to two editorial staff members, reporter Paul Rowley and arts editor Elizabeth Shepherd. [7]

Ann Leda Shapiro is an American artist. Ann Leda Shapiro was born and raised in New York City. She later attended the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of California Davis. Shapiro's work was shown in a 1973 solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. After a public outcry, The Whitney censored two works by the artist; "Anger" and "Two Sides of Self " both of which contained sexually explicit imagery of hermaphrodites. Forty-seven years later "Anger" was shown in a group show of censored artworks at Central Washington University's Gallery One. Shapiro is also the author of the book "My Island," published in 2009.
