Islay Watson (born 15 October 2000[ citation needed ]) is a Scottish female windsurfer. She won two silver medals at the IQFoil European Championships in 2020 and 2021.

Life

Watson was born in Aviemore in Scotland in 2000. Her sister Erin Watson is also a competitive surfer who became the RS:X youth national champion. [1] [2]

In 2017, she and her sister were both commuting to the National Sailing Academy in Weymouth, Dorset. They were both invited to meet the tennis star Andy Murray at a charity event he was organising in Glasgow. She and her sister got to meet Andy and his brother Jamie. She and Erin were given tips by Judy Murray. [3]

In 2018, she was in Texas at the Youth Sailing World Championships where she won a gold medal. [1] TeamGB also named her and Taekwondo expert Aaliyah Powell to join the 40plus team representing the UK at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. [4]

She won a silver medals at the first ever IQFoil European Championships in August 2020 on Lake Silvaplana in Switzerland. Helene Noesmoen won the gold medal and the Dutch windsurfer Lilian de Geus was third. [5] Later at Lake Garda in Italy she competed at the first ever iQFOiL International Games. She was the highest placed Briton and she took the first ever gold medal in the under-21 category. [6]

In 2021, the European championships were in Marseilles. The winner, Helene Noesmoen, was the same as 2020 and Watson again took the silver. The bronze medal was won by the Israeli Shachar Reshef. [7]

At the iQFOiL World Championships in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Watson was 20th and the second highest placed British woman. However, Emma Wilson took silver and she was the chosen entry for the UK at the Olympics that year. [8]

Onur Cavit Biriz is a Turkish windsurfer, who currently competes in IQFoil class. He is a student at Izmir University of Economics. He is an alumnus of Cağaloğlu Anadolu Lisesi.

Saskia Sills is a world champion British windsurfer and member of the British Sailing Team. She has competed in international events such as the European championships, and has been part of the British Sailing team from 2013 to present as a windsurfer initially in the RS:X (Women) Class, and more recently in the IQFoil class.

Katy Spychakov is an Israeli windsurfer. Spychakov won the 2015 Female Under 17 Techno 293 World Championships, the 2016 RS:X Class Youth Female World Championships, and the 2019 U21 Women's RS:X World Championships. She won a silver medal in the Women's 2019 RS:X World Championships.

Aleksandra Blinnikka is a professional windsurfer from Finland. She began competing internationally in 2013, initially in the Raceboard Class. Over the years, she has participated in various windsurfing disciplines, including Raceboard, RS:X Olympic Class, IQFoil Olympic Class, and Windsurfer LT events. In 2020, she transitioned to the newly introduced IQFOIL Olympic class, which was featured in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Blinnikka has secured two Gold medals at the Raceboard World Championships and the European Championships.

Emma Wilson is a British windsurfer who won a bronze medal in the RS:X event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She won the RS:X events at the Youth Sailing World Championships in 2016 and 2017, and won medals at the 2018 and 2019 RS:X European Championships, and the 2022 and 2023 IQFoil European Championships. She won her second Olympic bronze medal in the iQFoil at the 2024 Paris Games.

Helen E. "Penny" Wilson is a British former windsurfer, who won multiple Windsurfing World Championships events. She competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics coming 6th and the 1996 Summer Olympics coming 7th.

Kiran Badloe is a Dutch windsurfer. He won the gold medal in the men's event at the 2019 RS:X World Championships and 2020 RS:X World Championships.

iQFoil Windsurfing class

iQFoil is a windsurfing class selected by World Sailing to replace the RS:X for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The discipline has similarities to Formula Windsurfing, however a notable difference is that sailors only use one sail. The sail size is 9m² for the men and 8m² for the women. The rider has a choice between using a hydrofoil or a conventional 68 cm fin.

Finn Hawkins is a British windsurfer. He won a bronze medal at the 2018 World U21 Sailing Championships in Liepāja and a bronze medal, and Team GB's first, at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. He was subsequently a nominee for the UK Windsurfing Association's 2018 Windsurfer of the Year.

The iQFoil World Championships is an international sailing competition organized by the International Sailing Federation, held since 2021.

Noesmoen also won the RS:X event at the 2018 Sailing World Cup in Miami, and multiple junior world championships.

Merve Vatan is a Turkish sailor competing in the windsurfing class IQFoil. She qualified to participate at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

Marta Maggetti is an Italian windsurfer who sailed in the RS:X class and then later the iQFoil windsurfer class. She was fourth in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 on a windsurfer and in 2022 she won the IQFoil World Championship. She won a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics

Sam Sills is a British sailor. He competed in the IQFoil event at the 2024 Summer Olympics, where he reached the semi-finals.
