Ismael Cerna (1856–1901) was a Guatemalan poet.
Cerna was born in Chiquimula in 1856. He graduated as a Bachelor of Philosophy and later in medicine and law. He later joined the army but after the fall of Vicente Cerna was captured with his uncle and imprisoned. On his release he went to El Salvador in exile. On his return in 1884 he was imprisoned again in Guatemala, during which he wrote a great deal. Before his death a number of his works were published and have national significance in Guatemala. Notable poems include A Justo Refino Barrios, Ante la tumba de Barrios and A Guatemala.

Esquipulas, officially Municipality of Esquipulas, whose original name was Yzquipulas, is a town, with a population of 18,667, and a municipality located in the department of Chiquimula, in eastern Guatemala. Esquipulas' main attraction is the beautiful Black Christ located in the Basilica of Esquipulas, making the town an important place of Catholic pilgrimage for Central America. It is also one of the most important towns of the country and one that has had the most economic and cultural growth.

After defeat, he retired from public life.

Mariano Paredes (1800—1856) was President of Guatemala from January 1, 1849 to November 6, 1851 as a compromise chief of state. Paredes, an army colonel, came to power after Rafael Carrera was ineffective in quelling uprisings in eastern Guatemala and short-term governments failed to restore order. But Mariano Paredes was unable to control Guatemala.
The Battle of La Arada was fought on 2 February 1851 near the town of Chiquimula in Guatemala, between the forces of Guatemala and an Allied army from Honduras and El Salvador. As the most serious threat to Guatemala's liberty and sovereignty as a republic, it was the most important military victory in the country's history as an independent state.

Isabel de los Ángeles Ruano is a Guatemalan writer, poet, journalist and teacher. In 1954, she moved with her parents to Mexico; they returned to Guatemala three years later, living in various locations within Jutiapa Department and Chiquimula Department. In Chiquimula, she entered the Instituto Normal de Señoritas de Oriente. She graduated from Educación Primaria Urbana with a teacher's diploma in 1964 at the age 18. In 1966, she traveled on her own to Mexico, where she published her first book, entitled Cariátides, the foreword of the book having been written by the Spanish poet León Felipe. Returning to Guatemala in 1967, she began working in journalism. In 1978, she completed her university studies in Spanish and Latin American Language and Literature at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. In the late 1980s, she began to suffer from mental disorders. She was awarded the Miguel Ángel Asturias National Prize in Literature by the Ministry of Culture in 2001. Dressing as a man, she has lived for several years in Guatemala City's colonia Justo Rufino Barrios, zona 21.
Vicente Cerna y Cerna was president of Guatemala from 24 May 1865 to 29 June 1871. Loyal friend and comrade of Rafael Carrera, was appointed army's Field Marshal after Carraera's victory against Salvadorian leader Gerardo Barrios in 1863. He was appointed Carrera's successor after the caudillo's death in 1865 even though Guatemalan leaders would have preferred Field Marshal José Víctor Zavala.
José Víctor Ramón Valentín de las Ánimas Zavala y Córdova was a Guatemalan Field Marshal who participated in the wars of Rafael Carrera and the National War of Nicaragua against the invasion of William Walker. After the death of President Carrera in April 1865, Zavala – who was a close friend of the late President – was proposed as the next president, but instead Field Marshal Vicente Cerna y Cerna was appointed. A military brigade headquarters in Guatemala City is named "Mariscal Zavala Brigade" in his honor.
Julio Roberto Suárez Guerra is a Guatemalan banker. He served as President of the country's central bank, the Bank of Guatemala between 1 October 2014 and 30 September 2018. He spent the majority of his term detained, relating to a large-scale fraud case, of which he was cleared on appeal in July 2019.
Francisca Aparicio, 1st Marquis of Vistabella was the First Lady of Guatemala between 1874 and 1885, performing the state duties required for the post. After her husband's death, she moved with her seven children to New York City and was well known for her entertainments. In 1892, she married a Spanish parliamentarian and moved to Europe, where her children were educated. Two paintings of her, painted by Francisco Masriera y Manovens are in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid. When she was 14, she married Justo Rufino Barrios and immediately became the first Guatemalan First Lady in history to take office.

Barrios' War of Reunification was a war initiated by President Justo Rufino Barrios of Guatemala. His goal was to reunify Central America with himself as President. He died in battle on 2 April 1885 and peace was reached on 14 April.
