Iyin Ekiti

Iyin-Ekiti is a town in Ekiti State, Nigeria, situated between Igede Ekiti Ado Ekiti in the Southwestern part of Nigeria. It is at an elevation of 457 m. [1]

The town was established between 1951 and 1954, when the Uyin people of the villages of Araromi, Okesale, Oketoro and Okelawe moved to the site which was sparsely occupied back then. Iyin now has eight primary and three post primary Schools, a modern police station and barracks, a general post office, a local government maternity center and a general hospital. [2] The town also has a micro-finance bank. [3]

Robert Adeyinka Adebayo, the former Governor of the now defunct Western State of Nigeria from 1966-1971 was born in Iyin in 1928. [4] The Late Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, Oba Ademola Ajakaiye, was the pioneer chief judge of Ekiti State. [5] General Hospital Iyin Ekiti was renamed General Adeyinka Adebayo General Hospital, Iyin Ekiti, this change was effected by Ekiti State Government to immortalize Late General Robert Adeyinka Adebayo who died on March 8, 2017 - a day to his 88th birthday.

Iyin Ekiti is home to many prominent Nigerians among which are former Commissioner of Police (during the former military government regime of General Yakubu Gowon), Chief Hector Adeyeye Vincent Omooba, the former Minister for Aviation, Mr Babatunde Omotoba, Major Gen. Olawunmi; the former NYSC boss; Dr Eniola Ajayi, Nigerian ambassador to Hungary; the first executive governor of Ekiti State and a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Otunba Niyi Adebayo; Jake Adebayo - founder of one of Africa's most successfully bootstrapped tech startups [6] and Senator Micheal Bamidele among others.

Its closeness to the state capital has helped economically. The new Iyin road is also expected to bring development to the community, as the boundary of Ado-Iyin on the axis is developing rapidly with Tungba Village, NCCF and the Ekiti State Housing Estate all in Iyin-Ekiti.

The town embraces Christianity and Islam without jeopardizing the traditional aspect. In the area of tourism, the town is blessed with ecotourism and cultural tourism sites e. g. Esa Cave, Akonoso bend, and various cultural festivals like Okudu Festival, Odun Opa.

The Akoko are a large Yoruba cultural sub-group in the Northeastern part of Yorubaland. The area spans from Ondo State to Edo State in southwest Nigeria. The Akokos as a subgroup make up 20.3% of the population of Ondo State, and 5.7% of the population of Edo State. Out of the present 18 Local Government Councils it constitutes four; Akoko North-East, Akoko North-West, Akoko South-East and Akoko South-West, as well as the Akoko Edo LGA of Edo State. Abdul Azeez Kolawole Adeyemo, popularly known as 'Alhaji how are you', was a Nigerian and prominent Yoruba politician. He was born in Ado-Ekiti the Ekiti State capital to Sir. Rufai Adeyemo & Princess Adebolarin Agunsoye. Growing up as a Catholic during the British colonial era, he later converted to Islam. He became a politician early in his career. He joined the Western Region campaign of Egbe Omo Oduduwa founded by Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. He was also a front-line member of Action Group political party which later metamorphosed into Unity Party of Nigeria. His main legacy was to secure democracy and good governance in post independent Nigeria.

Richard Olufemi Bamisile is a Nigerian politician and current member of the Federal House of Representatives for Ekiti South II Constituency. He is also a former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly. He was among the candidates for the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the Ekiti State gubernatorial election primaries in 2019.

The 2009 Ekiti State gubernatorial election was held on 25 April 2009. It was, however, not until 5 May 2009, that the exercise was concluded due to electoral violence. Incumbent PDP Governor Segun Oni won re-election in the supplementary election, defeating AC Kayode Fayemi candidate to emerge winner.

The 2003 Ekiti State gubernatorial election occurred on April 19, 2003. PDP's Ayo Fayose won election for a first tenure, defeating Incumbent Governor, AD's Niyi Adebayo and three other candidates.

Former Secretary to the State Government Abiodun Oyebanji held the office for the APC by a 30% margin over first runner-up and SDP nominee—former Governor Olusegun Oni.

Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji, is a Nigerian politician who has served as the governor of Ekiti State since 2022. He is a former Secretary to the Ekiti State Government and a former Chief of Staff to the Governor of Ekiti State. He was elected governor during the 2022 Ekiti State gubernatorial election, having defeated Olusegun Oni of the Social Democratic Party and Bisi Kolawole of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
