J. Roman Andrus (1907 — June 23, 1993) was an American painter, printmaker, and educator. He taught art at Brigham Young University for more than three decades.
Andrus was born in 1907 in St. George, Utah. [1] [2] [3] He graduated from Brigham Young University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1942 and a master's degree in 1943. [3] He earned a PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1958. [1] [4]
Andrus taught in the Department of Art at Brigham Young University from 1940 to 1974. [3] He was also a painter and printmaker. He won the Institute of Fine Arts Purchase Prize in 1945 and 1950. [3] Andrus served on the board of the Utah Symphony. [1] According to the Utah Artists Project, "The overpowering interest in Andrus's work is in the interplay of color and rhythm." [3]
Andrus was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he married Ira Rose Pratt in the St. George Utah Temple. [1] They had three sons and a daughter. [1] Andrus died on June 23, 1993, in Provo, Utah, at age 85, [5] and he was buried in the Provo City Cemetery. [3] His work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., but not currently on view. [2]
Mahonri Mackintosh Young was an American social-realist sculptor and artist. During his lengthy career, he created more than 320 sculptures, 590 oil paintings, 5,500 watercolors, 2,600 prints, and thousands of drawings. However, he is primarily recognized for his sculpture. His work includes landscapes, portraits, busts, life-size sculptures, monuments, and engravings. Regardless of his medium of choice, his work is characterized by spontaneity; he often preferred to prepare his work with quick sketches on the scene. He felt this made his work more natural as compared to using a model in the studio. He was fairly commercially successful during his life, though he did not find success until his mid-30s. Large commissions for sculptures from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were particularly lucrative for him.
Avard Tennyson Fairbanks was a 20th-century American sculptor. Over his eighty-year career, he sculpted over 100 public monuments and hundreds of artworks. Fairbanks is known for his religious-themed commissions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including the Three Witnesses, Tragedy of Winter Quarters, and several Angel Moroni sculptures on LDS temple spires. Additionally, Fairbanks sculpted over a dozen Abraham Lincoln-themed sculptures and busts among which the most well-known reside in the U.S. Supreme Court Building and Ford's Theatre Museum.

William Dean Fausett was an American painter. His career spanned over six decades. He painted notable figures like Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Grandma Moses, Ezra Taft Benson, and Sir Alexander Fleming. His brother Lynn Fausett was also a painter. Fausett also purchased the historic house of Cephas Kent, Jr. in Dorset, Vermont and was instrumental in it the forming of the Kent Neighborhood Historic District.
Doris Patty Rosenthal was an American painter, printmaker, designer, and educator, who made solitary explorations into remote areas of Mexico in search of indigenous peoples. Over several decades beginning in the 1930s, Rosenthal made hundreds of sketches in charcoal and pastel depicting the everyday life and domestic activities of Indian and mestizo peasant culture, which she later used to create large-scale studio paintings. Life magazine featured Rosenthal's art and travels in Mexico in a five-page spread in 1943.
Howard Rusk Long was born in Columbia, Missouri, and was an American journalist and writer. Long graduated from the University of Missouri in 1930 with a Bachelor of Journalism. After earning his undergraduate degree, he worked with multiple newspapers in West Virginia, Arkansas, and Missouri. He obtained his master's degree in 1941 and later earned a doctorate from the University of Missouri. Long taught at the University of Missouri from 1940 to 1950, while he also served as the manager of the Missouri Press Association. After an unsuccessful political campaign, Long worked at Southern Illinois University as director of the School of Journalism from 1953 to 1972. During this time, Long also taught in Taipei and traveled to several other countries. Throughout his career, Long participated in multiple societies for newspaper editors, including co-founding the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors (ISWNE) in 1955. In his personal life, Long married Margaret Carney in 1931. He also belonged to Kiwanis, the Masonic lodge, and the Protestant Church.
Ture Bengtz was a Finnish-American artist associated with the Boston Expressionist School, an influential teacher at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and director of the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, Massachusetts. He also had a television show, "Bengtz on Drawing," on Boston's PBS station in the late 1950s.
John Leo Hafen was an American photographer and artist and the first person to bring color photography to Utah. Attending school in Springville, Utah, and Salt Lake City, Hafen experimented with different art forms. He received the Utah Arts Council Award for Best Amateur Work in Photography in 1899. He also won an award at the Art Institute in 1907 and won a Special Merit award from Desert Magazine in 1940. He co-owned the Olsen and Hafen photographic gallery in Provo, Utah, and toured with photographer George Edward Anderson. In 1908, Hafen married Daisy Marie Nelson, who died in childbirth in 1908. One year later, Hafen married Ella Lowry and had five children with her. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hafen was excommunicated for his involvement with the West Tintic Branch, whose members were found guilty of practicing "wife sacrifice", a form of wife swapping which they considered to be religiously justified.
