Jack Brenchley (23 November 1910 – 16 January 1970) [1] was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also played for and coached both Prahran and Oakleigh in the Victorian Football Association (VFA).

Career

Brenchley came from Edithvale to play for Prahran in the VFA during the 1930s. [2] He was on a half forward flank in Prahran's 1937 premiership team and remained with Prahran until the end of the 1940 VFA season, when he was cleared to coach Oakleigh. [3] [4]

Under Brenchley, Oakleigh won five games in 1941 and finished 10th on the ladder, of 12 clubs. [3]

The following year he played for St Kilda in the VFL, a late recruit to the league, at 31 years of age. [5] He made nine appearances and kicked eight goals. [6] It was his only season of senior football with St Kilda, but he remained at the club as coach of the seconds. [7]

He was non playing coach of Prahran in 1956. [8]

1953 VFA season

The 1953 Victorian Football Association season was the 72nd season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Port Melbourne Football Club, after it defeated Yarraville by 60 points in the Grand Final on 3 October. It was Port Melbourne's seventh VFA premiership, and it was the only premiership that the club won during a sequence of eight consecutive Grand Finals played from 1950 until 1957, and five consecutive minor premierships won from 1951 until 1955.

Edward Alan "Ted" Ryan was an Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Ryan started out at Oakleigh in the Victorian Football Association, from where he was recruited by Footscray. He appeared in six league games for Footscray, from rounds three to eight, in the 1945 VFL season. Oakleigh regained Ryan's services in 1946, without him being granted a clearance. He was full-back in Oakleigh's 1950 premiership team, a position he was only playing because of an injury to backman Alex Boyle. Also that year he was a member of the VFA representative team that played in Canberra in 1950. In 1951 he left for Hampden Football League club Mortlake, which he coached for three seasons. He returned to Oakleigh in 1954.

James Walter Thomas Jenkins was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Jenkins also coached Coburg and Brunswick in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). He is a ruckman in the Coburg Football Club Team of the Century.

Thomas McNeil was an Australian rules footballer and politician. He played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 1951 and 1952. Disappointed with his treatment during his playing career, McNeil was instrumental in the formation of a players union in 1955, the first attempt at a representative body for VFL players. From 1977 to 1989 he was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council.

William George Wells was an Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was injured during the war and told he was expected to spend the remainder of his life in a wheelchair, but made a successful comeback. After leaving the VFL he played for various clubs, including three stints with Williamstown in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). He also coached in the Wimmera Football League and Ballarat Football League.

Arthur Llewellyn Roberts was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was born in Warragul and recruited from Oakleigh in the Victorian Football Association. His younger brother, Billy Roberts, also played for St Kilda.
