Jack Massarik was a jazz journalist and musician. A respected jazz critic for more than 40 years, he provided continuous reportage for the London Evening Standard for 35 years from September 1979 until his death in July 2014, aged 74. [1]
During his journalistic career, he was a regular guest on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3 offering his expert advice about current jazz trends and jazz musicians in podcast interviews. [2] [3] Along with The Guardian's jazz critic John Fordham, he also regularly reviewed new jazz album releases and contributed reviews to the magazine Jazzwise for over 12 years. [4] [5]
Born in Stafford in the West Midlands to refugee parents who'd fled a war-torn Europe, Massarik learnt to play piano at the age of nine and then at 14 years of age played in a Big Band. During his time at the University of Manchester, he continued performing around the city, learning jazz piano and saxophone and compiling a what's-on column for the student newspaper. In the late Sixties he moved into journalism, progressed from local London papers to a career as a reporter and sub-editor with the Press Association in Fleet Street, and was a reporter/sub-editor on The Guardian newspaper's’ foreign and sports desks for more than 20 years. As well as critiquing established British and International jazz musicians, he also championied new jazz musicians and supported one of the few British female jazz promoters and bookers, Flavia Brilli, who ran the Central Bar jazz club. [7]
His long career as a journalist and jazz critic meant he was highly regarded by the jazz community and fellow jazz critics. A memorial service was held on July 30th 2014 attended by English jazz singer Claire Martin and British jazz pianist and broadcaster, Julian Joseph, both of whom worked with him regularly on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line Up [8] [9]
Managing director of Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, Simon Cooke, said of Massarik:
“Jack was as much a fixture on the UK jazz scene as any musician,”..... “His forthright and highly candid views mixed with his love for, and deep knowledge of, the music made him a must-read; his willingness to support the newer musicians led to the development of many of the UK's present jazz stars.” [10]

Critic John Fordham has described him as "an appealing presence on the British jazz circuit for over 40 years.... Originally a Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins disciple ... Themen has proved himself remarkably attentive to the saxophone styles of subsequent generations."

Richard David Cook was a British jazz writer, magazine editor and former record company executive. Sometimes credited as R. D. Cook, Cook was born in Kew, Surrey, and lived in west London as an adult. A writer on music from the late 1970s until he died, Cook was co-author, with Brian Morton, of The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, which lasted for ten editions until 2010. His other books included Richard Cook's Jazz Encyclopedia, Blue Note Records: The Biographyand, and It's About That Time: Miles Davis On and Off the Record.

The Seven Dials Jazz Club opened its doors in 1980 as a venue for live music in Covent Garden, London. It hosted a range of artists and styles of jazz and began to attract a regular audience. Starting in 1983, a series of saxophone festivals was held on the premises each year.

The critically acclaimed singer has released five albums under her own name. Jazzwise Magazine wrote that McFarlane, "is one of the UK’s pre-eminent jazz vocalists and composers". She is a multi - award winner, including a MOBO Awards., two Jazz FM awards and an Urban Music award.
Maciek Pysz is a jazz musician, guitarist and composer. He is known for his clear lyrical phrasing, his virtuosity and his imaginative, cinematic compositions inspired by people, places and experiences.
David Watson is an English record producer, singer and musician. Born and raised in North London, he has produced albums for Paul Wassif, Mark Abis, Sam Sallon, Dylan Howe, OMD and Claudia Brücken, and has worked with artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Neil Cowley, Beth Rowley, Eric Clapton and Bert Jansch. He is the father of actress Indica Watson.

Bex Burch's Vula Viel is a jazz group from London, playing music based on the sound of the gyil, a wooden xylophone from West Africa, fused with elements of electronica and minimal music. The group was formed by Bex Burch, a musician from Yorkshire. Burch trained in percussion at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she was introduced to the minimalist music of Steve Reich, and then spent three years with the Dagaaba people of the Upper West Region of Ghana. There she learned music and xylophone making as the apprentice of a master xylophonist Thomas Sekgura before returning to the United Kingdom and forming Vula Viel. The name Vula Viel was given to Burch on the completion of her apprenticeship, and means "Good is Good" in the Dagaaba language, Dagaare.
Tomorrow's Warriors (TW) is a jazz music education and artist development organisation that was co-founded in 1991 by Janine Irons and Gary Crosby, committed to championing diversity, inclusion and equality across the arts through jazz, with a special focus on "Black musicians, female musicians and those whose financial or other circumstances might lock them out of opportunities to pursue a career in the music industry". Crosby drew inspiration from having been a member of the Jazz Warriors, a London-based group of musicians that in the 1980s showcased many young Black British musicians who went on to achieve international success.
Kevin Le Gendre is a British journalist, broadcaster and author whose work focuses on Black music. He is deputy editor of Echoes magazine, has written for a wide range of publications, including Jazzwise, MusicWeek, Vibrations, The Independent On Sunday and The Guardian, and is a contributor to such radio programmes as BBC Radio 3's J to Z and BBC Radio 4's Front Row. At the 2009 Parliamentary Jazz Awards Le Gendre was chosen as "Jazz Journalist of the Year".
The Central Barjazz club was a music venue in Clerkenwell, London, England. It was founded by booker and promoter Flavia Brilli in 1999.The club was located at 58 Old Street in Clerkenwell. It was situated on the first floor of the Central Bar which was used for various music nights and events until the promoter Flavia Brilli established the venue as a jazz club showcasing top British jazz musicians, visiting international players and young upcoming musicians.
Jazz Frames was a designer mirror shop that specialised in experimental, handmade mirrors located at 106 Camden Road, London, the former premises of fashion brand Swanky Modes.
