Jaclyn Barclay (born 27 December 2006) is an Australian swimmer. She won one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships. Barclay swims for the St. Peters Western Swim Club in Brisbane.
Barclay swam the 200-meter backstroke title at the 2023 Australian Championships and came third in both of the shorter backstroke distances. [2] She won gold in the 100-meter backstroke and bronze in the 50-meter backstroke at the 2023 Junior World Championships. She won another gold medal with the 4 x 100-meter medley relay. [3] [4] She won a silver medal with the 4 x 100-meter mixed medley relay. In both relays she was only used in the final, with Iona Anderson swimming in the preliminary rounds. [5]
At the 2024 World Championships in Doha, the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay team consisting of Alexandria Perkins, Barclay, Abbey Harkin and Shayna Jack swam the fastest preliminary time. In the final, Throssell, Perkins, Harkin and Jack beat the preliminary time by 1.4 seconds and came second behind the Dutch team. Barclay also received a silver medal for her performance in the preliminary round. [6] In the 100 meter backstroke, Claire Curzan from the United States won with a lead of 0.83 seconds over Iona Anderson, who in turn finished 0.06 seconds ahead of Canadian Ingrid Wilm. Barclay came fourth, 0.10 seconds behind Wilm. In the 50 meter backstroke, Barclay was eliminated in the semifinals. In the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay, Kiah Melverton, Abbey Harkin, Jaclyn Barclay and Brianna Throssell were used in the preliminary round. In the final, Harkin, Jack, Throssel and Melverton came third. In the 200 meter backstroke, Curzan won with 1.26 seconds ahead of Barclay, who finished two seconds ahead of third-placed Belarusian Anastasiya Shkurdai. [7] [8] The Australian 4 x 100 meter medley relay team, consisting of Barclay, Harkin, Perkins and Throssell, qualified for the final with the third fastest preliminary time. In the final, Anderson, Harkin, Throssell and Jack were five seconds faster than the preliminary relay and won ahead of the Swedes and the Canadians. [9] Barclay won a silver medal in an individual event and a medal in each color for her appearances in relay heats.
At 17 years old, Barclay is the youngest swimmer in the 2024 Australian Olympic team. [10]
Natalie Anne Coughlin Hall is an American former competition swimmer and twelve-time Olympic medalist. While attending the University of California, Berkeley, she became the first woman ever to swim the 100-meter backstroke in less than one minute. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, she became the first U.S. female athlete in modern Olympic history to win six medals in one Olympiad, and the first woman ever to win a 100-meter backstroke gold in two consecutive Olympics. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, in her third and final Olympic appearance, she earned a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
Aaron Wells Peirsol is an American former competition swimmer and backstroke specialist who is a former world champion and world record-holder. He is a three-time Olympian and seven-time Olympic medalist. Individually, he currently holds the world record in the 200-meter backstroke event. In February 2011, Peirsol announced his retirement, saying, "I ended up doing everything I set out to do."
Eithan Urbach is a former backstroke swimmer from Israel who swam for Auburn University. Swimming for Israel, Urbach competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Urbach's 4x100 Israeli medley relay team, with Urbach swimming the backstroke leg, set an Israeli National Record in a preliminary heat, becoming the first Israeli swimming team to make the finals of this Olympic event. In 1997, Urbach shared Israel's Sportsman of the Year award.
Matthew Grevers is a former American competition swimmer who competes in the backstroke and freestyle events, and is a six-time Olympic medalist. He has won a total of thirty-three medals in major international competition, fourteen gold, twelve silver, and seven bronze spanning the Olympics, World Championships, and the Universiade. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Grevers won gold medals as a member of the U.S. teams in the 4×100-meter freestyle and 4×100-meter medley relays, and a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke. Four years later, at the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won gold medals in the 100-meter backstroke and the 4×100-meter medley relay, and a silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
Haley Cope, also known by her married name Haley Clark, is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic medalist, and former world record-holder. She won a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics, eight world championship medals, and held a world record in the 50-meter backstroke.
Ryan Fitzgerald Murphy is an American competitive swimmer specializing in backstroke. He is a five-time Olympic gold medalist and the former world-record holder in the men's 100-meter backstroke.
Luke Greenbank is an English professional swimmer who specialises in backstroke. A medalist in the 200 metre backstroke at the Olympic Games and the World and European championships, he also swam the first leg in the 2019 World and 2020 European Championship gold medal-winning Great Britain medley relay teams. He won a silver medal as lead-off for Great Britain in the 4 x 100 metre medley relay for men at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Kylie Jacqueline Masse is a Canadian competitive swimmer. A noted backstroke specialist, she is a five-time Olympic medallist, three-time World Aquatics champion, three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and the 2018 Pan Pacific champion in the 100 metre backstroke. She is currently the captain for the Toronto Titans of the International Swimming League.
Regan Smith is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in backstroke and butterfly events.
Kaylee Rochelle McKeown is an Australian swimmer and quintuple Olympic gold medalist. She is the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 and 200 metres backstroke. She is the world record holder in the long course 50 metre backstroke and the long course 200 metre backstroke, and formerly in the 100 metre backstroke and 200 metre backstroke. She won gold in both the 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke at both the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. She holds junior world records in the long course 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter butterfly and the short course 50 meter butterfly and 100 meter butterfly. She also holds American records in the short course 50 meter backstroke and 50 meter butterfly, and formerly held the American record in the 100 yard butterfly. She currently swims for the Virginia Cavaliers.

Shaine Casas is an American professional swimmer. He is an Americas record holder in the short course 4×50 meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, and placed seventh in the 50-meter backstroke. In 2022, at the year's World Aquatics Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke. Gretchen Claire Walsh is an American competitive swimmer, swimsuit model, and the world record holder in the 100 meter butterfly, 4×100 medley relay, mixed gender 4×100 medley relay, 50 meter butterfly, 100 meter butterfly, and 100 meter IM. She won the silver medal in the 100 meter butterfly at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she also set the Olympic record in the 100 meter butterfly in the semifinals with a time of 55.38.
