Jacquelien Scherpen

Jacquelien Maria Aleida Scherpen is a Dutch applied mathematician specializing in nonlinear control theory. [1] She is a professor in the faculty of science and engineering at the University of Groningen, director of the Groningen Engineering Center, and former scientific director of the Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen (ENTEG). [2] [3] She has been rector magnificus of the university since September 2023.

Education and career

Scherpen studied applied mathematics at the University of Twente, earning a master's degree in 1990 and completing her Ph.D. in 1994. [2] [3] Her doctoral dissertation, Balancing for Nonlinear Systems, was jointly promoted by Huibert Kwakernaak and Arjan van der Schaft. [4]

She was affiliated with the Delft University of Technology from 1994 until 2006, when she moved to her present position at the University of Groningen. [2] [3] She was scientific director of ENTEG from 2013 to 2019, and has directed the Groningen Engineering Center since 2016. [2]

On 1 September 2023 she became rector magnificus of the university, succeeding Cisca Wijmenga. [5]

Recognition

Scherpen was named an IEEE Fellow in 2021 "for contributions to nonlinear model reduction and passivity-based control". [6] She is also a knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. [7] In 2022, she was elected Chair of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory (SIAM SIAG/CST). [8]

Gábor Stépán, Hungarian professor of applied mechanics, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), former dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Joseph Pierre LaSalle was an American mathematician specialising in dynamical systems and responsible for important contributions to stability theory, such as LaSalle's invariance principle which bears his name.

Abraham Jan (Arjan) van der Schaft is emeritus professor of systems and control theory at the Bernoulli Institute of Mathematics Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, University of Groningen. He is notable for his contributions to network modelling and control of complex physical systems, specifically in the areas of Port-Hamiltonian systems, passivity-based control, nonlinear H control, hybrid systems, and port-thermodynamical systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Marta Lewicka is a Polish-American professor of mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in mathematical analysis. Lewicka has contributed results in the theory of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, fluid dynamics, calculus of variations, nonlinear elasticity, nonlinear potential theory and differential games.

Jan Borgman was a Dutch astronomer and university administrator. He was professor of astronomical observation technique at the University of Groningen from 1968 to 1988. During this period he served as rector magnificus from 1978 to 1981 and chair of the board of governors from 1981 to 1988. Borgman subsequently became chairperson of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.

Kirsten Anna Morris is a Canadian applied mathematician specializing in control theory, including work on flexible structures, smart materials, hysteresis, and infinite-dimensional optimization. She is a professor at the University of Waterloo, the former chair of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Control and Systems, the author of two books on control theory, and an IEEE Fellow.

Violet Bushwick Haas was an American applied mathematician specializing in control theory and optimal estimation who became a professor of electrical engineering at Purdue University College of Engineering.
