Lower Saxony is a German state in northwestern Germany. It is the second-largest state by land area, with 47,614 km2 (18,384 sq mi), and fourth-largest in population among the 16 Länder federated as the Federal Republic of Germany. In rural areas, Northern Low Saxon and Saterland Frisian are still spoken, albeit in declining numbers.

The Regierungsbezirk Weser-Ems was the most westerly of the four administrative regions of Lower Saxony, Germany, bordering on the Dutch provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel. It was established in 1978 by merging the former regions Osnabrück, Aurich, and Oldenburg. It was formally dissolved by the end of 2004 along with the other Regierungsbezirke of Lower Saxony as part of an effort to optimize the administrative system of the state.

The Jade Bight, also known as Jade Bay; German: Jadebusen) is a bight or bay on the North Sea coast of Germany. It was formerly known simply as (the) Jade or Jahde. Because of the very low input of freshwater, it is classified as a bay rather than an estuary.
JadeWeserPort is Germany's largest harbour project. It is supported by the states of Lower Saxony and Bremen. This new container port is located at Wilhelmshaven at the Jade Bight, a bay on the North Sea coast. It has a natural water depth in excess of 18 m. Container ships with a length of 430 metres (1,410 ft) and 16.5 metres (54 ft) draught will be able to call the JadeWeserPort at any tide. Construction work was begun in March 2008. The port was opened on 21 September 2012. However, due to the Great Recession, the port wasn't given the warmest of welcomes, and very little TEU traffic flowed through the brand new harbour. But the container handling could be raised from 60,000 in 2014 to 426,700 twenty-foot equivalent unit in 2015. The yearly capacity of the port is 2,700,000 TEU.
Sande is a municipality in the district of Friesland, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated near the Jade Bight, approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) west of Wilhelmshaven, and 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) southeast of Jever.

Kaiserliche Werft Wilhelmshaven was a German shipbuilding company in Wilhelmshaven, founded in 1871 and closed in 1918. Together with Kaiserliche Werft Danzig and Kaiserliche Werft Kiel it was one of three shipyards which solely produced warships for the Preußische Marine and the following German Kaiserliche Marine. With the end of World War I all three imperial shipyards were closed, but the Wilhelmshaven shipyard was reopened in 1919, first as Reichsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven, and after 1935 named Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven.
The Politics of Lower Saxony takes place within a framework of a federal parliamentary representative democratic republic, where the Federal Government of Germany exercises sovereign rights with certain powers reserved to the states of Germany including Lower Saxony. Since 1948 politics in the state has been dominated by the rightist Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the leftist Social Democratic Party. Lower Saxony was one of the origins of the German environmentalist movement in reaction to the state government's support for underground nuclear waste disposal. This led to the formation of the German Green Party in 1980.
Schillig is a village in the Friesland district of Lower Saxony in Germany. It is situated on the west coast of Jade Bay and is 20 km (12 mi) north of the town of Wilhelmshaven.
Oldenburg Land is a region and regional association in the German state of Lower Saxony in the area of the former Grand Duchy of Oldenburg (1815–1918), the later Free State of Oldenburg (1918–1946) and administrative district of Oldenburg, without its exclaves, along the rivers Hunte and Hase. In the region between coastline, Dümmer and Damme Hills some of the population still speak Low German today and, in Saterland also Saterland Frisian. The region is rich in old Lower Saxon customs such as Schützenfests or Kohlfahrten. Typical country sports include Klootschießen and Boßeln.

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg is one of the marine science institutes at the German coast and the only university-based marine research institute in Lower Saxony, Germany. The ICBM is located on the campus Wechloy in Oldenburg, with locations in Wilhelmshaven and on the island of Spiekeroog. The ICBM operates the Wadden Sea time series station Spiekeroog (WSS) and several research vessels.
