Ernesto Jafeth Cabrera Franco (Guatemala City,28 November 1948 [1] ) is a Guatemalan politician who served as Vice President of Guatemala from 2016 to 2020 under the government of Jimmy Morales.
Cabrera studied at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala,where he obtained a degree in medicine and surgery. He was Rector of the University between 1994 and 1998. [2]
Cabrera's political career started in 1999 when he was one of the founders of the National Unity of Hope with Álvaro Colom. Cabrera left the party shortly afterward. In 2004,he became Secretary for Agricultural Affairs. [2]
In May 2015,Caberera was announced as the National Convergence Front candidate for the office of Vice President for the 2015 elections. He was attached to Jimmy Morales as a presidential candidate. [3]
In September 2015,Cabrera announced that he believed that one of the causes of Guatemala's problems was to be found in the Spanish colonization of the Americas,stating that if Guatemala had been taken over by another country the problems would not have been so grave. [4]
On 6 November 2015,Cabrera was officially declared as Vice President-elect by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Guatemala. [5]
His son,Jafeth Ernesto Cabrera Cortéz,was elected to the Congress of Guatemala for the National Convergence Front in the 2015 parliamentary elections. He could,however,not take up his seat due to a law prohibiting relatives of the President and Vice-President from becoming deputies.
The National Unity of Hope is a populist political party in Guatemala. It was founded in 2002 and defined itself as a social-democratic and social-Christian party,but nowadays it is described as a right-wing political party. It is the largest political party in Guatemala by the number of members.

Óscar Julio Vian Morales S.D.B. was archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Guatemala from his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on 2 October 2010 until his death from cancer. He had previously served as archbishop of Los Altos in Guatemala. He was born in Guatemala City,ordained a priest in 1976,and appointed Vicar Apostolic of El Petén in 1996. He was installed as Archbishop of Los Altos on 17 April 2007.

Natalia Górriz de Morales was a Guatemalan teacher,pedagogue,and the founder of the Instituto Normal Central para Señoritas in 1888. In 1892,the government of General JoséMaría Reina Barrios promoted her to the post of Inspector General of Girls' Schools in Guatemala City. She wrote a book dedicated to Christopher Columbus in honor of that year's fourth centenary of his landing. Her teaching career was put on hold when she married Próspero Morales,in 1894,but after his death in 1898,she started teaching again.
Próspero Morales was a Guatemalan lawyer who served as Secretary of Infrastructure,War and Public Instruction during JoséMaría Reina Barrios administration. Two year after being in office,Morales married the well known Guatemalan teacher Natalia Górriz. Morales resigned as Secretary on 5 March 1897 in order to run for president for the upcoming presidential elections;however,due to the failure of the Exposición Centroamericana and the severe economic crisis that Guatemala was undergoing at the time,due to the plummeting of coffee and silver international prices,general Reina Barrios suspended the elections and forcibly extended his tenure until 1902. Morales then joined the revolution that was brewing in Quetzaltenango,but the rebels were defeated on 14 September 1897. After Reina Barrios assassination on 8 February 1898,he unsuccessfully tried to overthrow interim president Manuel Estrada Cabrera–who also had served as Secretary under Reina Barrios–but was repelled by the forces of former president Manuel Lisandro Barillas.
The La Línea corruption case began in Guatemala on April 16,2015 when the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala and State prosecutors accused a number of politicians in the administration of President Otto Pérez Molina of setting up a customs corruption ring with the help of high-ranking officials in the tax and customs administration. Several demonstrations ensued,calling for the resignation of Pérez Molina and his vice-president Roxana Baldetti. Among the accused were the retired captain Juan Carlos Monzón,and the directors of the Tax Administration Superintendency or Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria,(SAT),an entity analogous to the US Internal Revenue Service. Baldetti resigned in early May to the joy of thousands of demonstrators.

General elections were held in Guatemala on 16 June 2019,to elect the president,Congress and local councils. A second round of the presidential elections was held on 11 August 2019,since no candidate won a majority in the first round. Alejandro Giammattei won the election in the second round of voting.
A referendum on the territorial dispute with Belize was held in Guatemala on Sunday 15 April 2018. Voters were asked whether the Guatemalan government should request the International Court of Justice to resolve the territorial dispute permanently,as part of a commitment signed in December 2008 between Guatemala and Belize. Guatemalan Vice President,Jafeth Cabrera,stated that Belize would hold their referendum in response in May 2018,but Belize released a statement denying that and stating rather that it would hold the referendum after the re-registration process has occurred to ensure an accurate and fair vote.

Lucrecia María Hernández Mack was a Guatemalan physician and politician who served a deputy of the Congress from 2020 until her death in 2023. In July 2016,President Jimmy Morales nominated Hernández Mack as the minister of Public Health and Social Assistance,becoming the first woman to serve in that position. In 2017,she resigned from her position in protest over President Morales' order to expel United Nations anti-corruption investigator Iván Velásquez Gómez. Thelma Cabrera is an indigenous human rights defender and politician. Cabrera ran for president of Guatemala in 2019 as part of the political party,Movement for the Liberation of Peoples. She finished fourth in the 2019 election garnering 10.3% of the popular vote.
General elections were held in Guatemala on 25 June 2023 to elect the president and vice president,all 160 seats in Congress,all 20 members of the Central American Parliament,and mayors and councils for all the country's 340 municipalities. Incumbent president Alejandro Giammattei was constitutionally prohibited from running for a second four-year term. However,as no presidential candidate obtained over 50 percent of the vote in the first round on 25 June 2023,a second round was held between the top two finishers on 20 August 2023:Congressman Bernardo Arévalo of the Movimiento Semilla and Sandra Torres,a former first lady representing the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party. Arévalo defeated Torres in the second round with nearly 61 percent of the vote in what was seen as a landslide. The ruling Vamos party won the largest number of seats in Congress.
