Jagath Kodithuwakku, RWP RSP ndu is a retired Sri Lankan general. He was the 60th Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army(CoS) and former Deputy Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army. [1] He also served as the Colonel of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Light Infantry. [2]
Jagath Kodithuwakku received his education from St. Aloysius College Galle. General Kodithuwakku completed his graduation from the University of Colombo and then went for his MS degree in Human Resource Management and a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Advancement. He also completed another Postgraduate Diploma in Conflict Resolution and Security Studies from the University of Bradford in UK. He is also a distinguished graduate of Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies USA. [3]
He enlisted in the Sri Lanka Army on 27 October 1986 to the Intake 26 and completed the basic training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy. After completion of officer training at Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) and Pakistan Military Academy(PMA), Kodithuwakku was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry. [4] He served as the Commander Security Force - Jaffna before he joined at Deputy Chief office. [5] He retired in November 2022 from the post "Chief of staff of the Army, Sri Lanka".
The Sri Lanka Army is the oldest and largest of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces. The army was officially established as the Ceylon Army in 1949, though the army traces its roots back in 1881 when Ceylon Light Infantry Volunteers was created; the army was renamed as the 'Sri Lanka Army' when Sri Lanka became a republic in 1972. In 2024, the Army had approximately 150,000 personnel.
Field Marshal Gardihewa Sarath Chandralal Fonseka is a Sri Lankan politician and former army officer. He was the eighteenth Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, and under his command the Sri Lankan Army ended the 26-year Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009, defeating the militant group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam; he thereafter briefly served as the Chief of Defence Staff. After retiring from the Army with the rank of General, he entered politics as the common opposition candidate in the 2010 presidential election contesting against President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) provides the armour capability of the Sri Lanka Army, with vehicles such as the T-55AM2, and type 80/88 main battle tanks; the BMP infantry fighting vehicle; and the BTR-80, and WZ551 armoured personnel carriers. It comprises five regular armoured regiments, a volunteer regiment, and a regimental band. It has an independent Armoured Brigade and is headquartered at Rock House Army Camp, Colombo.
Major General Janaka Perera, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, VSP was a Sri Lankan General and politician. He served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and is considered one of the most distinguished generals in Sri Lankan history. After retiring from the army he served as a Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia and Ambassador to Indonesia. He was the opposition leader of the North Central Provincial Council until he and his wife were killed on 6 October 2008 by a suicide bomber. The LTTE have been blamed for the bombing by Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
General Tissa Indraka Weeratunga, VSV was a Sri Lankan general. He was a former Commander of the Sri Lankan Army and the first General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Joint Operations Headquarters (JOH), he was later Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Canada from 1986 till 1990.
Major General Sarath Munasinghe, was a senior Sri Lanka Army officer and politician. He had served Commander Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna and following his retirement, went on to be elected as Member of Parliament of Kurunegala District and Deputy speaker and chairman of committees of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
General Jagath Jayasuriya, VSV, USP is a retired Sri Lanka Army officer; he was the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 15 July 2009 to 31 July 2013. During the closing stages of the Sri Lankan Civil War, he served as the Commander Security Forces Headquarters - Wanni with overall command of SLA offensives in the Wanni region during the 2008 - 2009 period. He was also the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Suriname from June 2014 to August 2017.
General Shantha H.S. Kottegoda, WWV, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP is a retired senior Sri Lanka Army officer. He was the seventeenth commander of the Sri Lankan Army from 1 July 2004 – 5 December 2005. He had served as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Brazil and Thailand. In April 2019, following the Easter Sunday bombings he was appointed as the permanent secretary to the Ministry of Defence.
General R. M. Daya Ratnayake, WWV, RWP and three Bars, RSP, USP is a retired Sri Lanka Army officer who served as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 2013 to 2015. Following his retirement from the army, he served as the Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Secretary to the Ministry of Industries.
Major General Jagath Dias, WWV, RWP, RSP, USP was a Sri Lankan general, who served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army. He was the General Officer Commanding, 57 Division and 56 Division. He was the Sri Lankan Deputy Ambassador to Germany, Switzerland and the Vatican.
Major General K. Jagath Alwis, RWP, RSP, USP is a retired Sri Lankan senior army officer. He served as the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, former Chief of National Intelligence, Commander Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna and the Colonel Commandant of the Military Intelligence Corps. He had served as Sri Lankan Deputy Ambassador to Israel and Commander of the President's Guard. Currently he is the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security.
General Akurathiya Withanage Jagath Crishanthe de Silva, RWP, USP is a retired senior Sri Lanka Army officer. He had served as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 22 February 2015 to 4 July 2017, as the Chief of Defence Staff from 29 June 2017 to 21 August 2017. Later he was appointed as the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
Major General Jeewaka Ruwan Kulatunga, RSP, ndc, psc, is a retired Sri Lankan general. He served as the Chief of National Intelligence having served as the Commandant of the Defence Services Command and Staff College and the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
General N.U.M. Mahesh W. Senanayke, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP is a retired Sri Lankan Army senior officer who served as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 2017 to 2019. Senanayake had previously been the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna, General Officer Commanding, 52 Division and Brigade Commander, Special Forces Brigade. Having started his military career as a military engineer, Senanayake became a special forces officer and is a veteran of all four phases of the Sri Lankan Civil War, he has served in both its Northern and Eastern theaters. Following his retirement, he contested the 2019 Sri Lankan presidential election and came fourth after the three candidates of the three major political parties in the island.

He was the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lankan Army, having served as the Commandant of the Volunteer Force, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters – Wanni and Master General of Ordnance. He served as the Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Engineers.
Major General Rasika Fernando, RSP, ndc was a Sri Lankan army general. He was the Deputy Chief of Staff of Sri Lankan Army, having served as the, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters – East. He is the Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka National Guard.
Lieutenant General H.L.V.M. Liyanage, widely known as Vikum Liyanage, is a Sri Lanka Army general. He is the current Commander of the Sri Lanka Army serving from 1 June 2022. Prior to become the army commander, he was the 59th Chief of Staff of the Army. On 1 June 2022, Liyanage assumed as the 24th Commander of Sri Lanka Army. Earlier, he served as the Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force.
Major General Channa Weerasuriya RWP, RSP, ndu was a Sri Lankan army general. He was the Chief of Staff of the Army. Earlier, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army (DCOS). Prior to join DCOS, he served as the Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and before this appointment he had served as Commander, Security Forces - East and General Officer Commanding(GOC), 22 Infantry Division.
Major General D G S Senarath Yapa RWP, RSP, ndu was a Sri Lanka Army general. He is the incumbent Commandant of the National Defence College, Sri Lanka and former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army. Before that he was the 49th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. Prior to join SLVF, he served as the Commander of Security Forces (West) and (Jaffna).
Major General Sanjaya Wanasinghe RSP, VSV, USP, VSP is a retired general in the Sri Lanka Army. He served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, having served as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army, Commandant of the Volunteer Force and Commander, Security Forces Headquarters – Mullaitivu. He was the Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Artillery.
