Jai Narayan Patel or J. N Patel (born 5 October 1950) is an Indian Judge and former Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

Career

Patel was born in 1950. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 27 August 1974 and started practice on Civil, Criminal and Constitutional matters in the District Courts and the High Court at Nagpur Bench. Patel also served as a teacher in University College of Law. On 20 April 1987, he was appointed a Judge of the City Civil Court. He was appointed Designated Judge in TADA Court, the Special Court constituted for the trial of 1993 Bombay bombings case. [1] [2] He became the Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 11 March 1996 and permanent Judge on 7 January 1997. Being the senior most judge he served as acting Chief Justice of Bombay High court after Chief Justice Anil Dave was elevated as judge of the Supreme Court of India. [3] [4] In 2010 Justice Patel became the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court and retired on 5 October 2012. After retirement he became the head of the Judicial Commission of 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence. [5] [6]

The 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence refers to violence during an annual celebratory gathering on 1 January 2018 at Bhima Koregaon to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon. The violence and stone pelting by a crowd at the gathering resulted in the death of a 28-year old youth and injuries to five others. The annual celebration, also called Elgar Parishad convention, was organised by retired justices B. G. Kolse Patil and P. B. Sawant. Justice Sawant stated that the term "Elgar" meant loud invitation or loud declaration.

Hashmatrai Khubchand Chainani was the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani is a former Indian judge and prosecutor, who last served as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. Previously, as a judge of the Bombay High Court, she notably upheld the conviction of several persons for the rape of a pregnant Muslim woman during the 2002 Gujarat riots, chastising investigative authorities for their inaction in the matter, and also refused parole for those convicted in the 1993 Bombay bombings. She retired in 2019, after refusing to accept a controversial transfer from the Madras High Court to the Meghalaya High Court.
