Jakob van Bruggen

Jakob van Bruggen (born 23 September 1936) is a Dutch New Testament scholar. He served as Professor of New Testament at the Theological University of the Reformed Churches in Kampen from 1967 to 2001. [1]

van Bruggen was born in Odoorn and studied at the Theological College in Kampen before becoming a minister of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (Liberated). He gained his PhD from the University of Utrecht.

van Bruggen edited the third series of Commentaar Nieuwe Testament, and wrote a number of volumes, including those on Matthew, Mark, Luke, Romans, and Galatians.

van Bruggen is best known in the English-speaking world for his 1976 book The Ancient Text of the New Testament (Dutch: De tekst van het Nieuwe Testament), in which he defended the Byzantine text-type [2] ) and for his 1978 work, The Future of the Bible (originally published in Dutch in 1975 as De toekomst van de bijbelvertaling). According to Theodore Letis, "No single book has done more to alert confessional Christians - who still regard the Judeo-Christian Bible as an authoritative text - that a wolf was in the sheep pen" than The Future of the Bible. [3] In that work, van Bruggen "emphasized the critical role that the church has to play in Bible translation." [4]

He was rector magnificus of that institution twice.

The Theological University of Apeldoorn (TUA) is the Dutch theological university of the Christian Reformed Churches. More than 130 students study at the university in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. The theological course lasts six years. The student is in the bachelor's program for the first three years. This has a more orientating character, and includes the languages Classic Greek and Koine Greek, Latin and Biblical Hebrew. In the three-year master's program that follows, further studies and specialization are discussed. The training is specifically aimed at educating pastors. After 2006 he focused on topics of book and church history, and the reception of the Bible in Dutch-language literature from the eighteenth century onwards.

Benne Holwerda was a Dutch theologian and biblical scholar. He was born in Marrum, studied at the Theological College of Kampen, and became a minister of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands. In 1944 he left to help form the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (Liberated) and served as Professor of Old Testament at the newly established Theological College in Kampen until his death.

The NBV21 is an ecumenical Dutch-language Bible translation, created by the Dutch-Flemish Bible Society and published in 2021. The NBV21 is a revised version of the New Bible Translation of 2004. In comparison to the NBV, around 12,000 edits were made to the NBV21. A major difference was the implementation of highly-requested reverential capitalization, in addition to other edits motivated by new discoveries in Biblical studies. Reactions of readers to the previous version were also taken into account in the NBV21.
