James H. Anderson is an American government official and academic who served as acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in the Donald Trump administration.
Anderson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Amherst College. [2] He then earned a Master of Arts in law and a PhD in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. His 1993 doctoral thesis was entitled National decisionmaking and quick-strike intervention during the 1980s:a comparative analysis of operations Urgent Fury,El Dorado Canyon,and Just Cause and his thesis advisor was Richard H. Shultz. [1]
Anderson began his career as a United States Marine Corps intelligence officer. In the Bush administration,he served in the Office of Secretary of Defense,notably as the Director of Middle East Policy in International Security Affairs,among other policy positions from 2001 to 2009. He also worked as a professor at the Marine Corps University,National Defense University,George Washington University,the University of Phoenix,and Lasell University. [3] From 2009 to 2012,he worked as a professor of international security studies at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies. From 2012 to 2015,he served as dean of academics and deputy director of the Marine Corps War College. From 2015 until his appointment,Anderson was the vice president for academic affairs at the Marine Corps University.
In 2018,Anderson was nominated to serve as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy,Plans,and Capabilities. On August 28,2018,the U.S. Senate confirmed him by Voice Vote. [4] On March 1,2020,Anderson was selected to serve as acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy after the resignation of John Rood. [5] [6] [7] [8] On June 6,the U.S. Senate confirmed him as Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy by a vote of 78–17. [9]
Anderson resigned November 10,2020,the day after Secretary Mark Esper was fired. [10] He is the recipient of several professional awards,to include the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service (November 2020).

Joseph Francis Dunford Jr. is a retired United States Marine Corps general who served as the 19th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1,2015 to September 30,2019. He was the 36th commandant of the Marine Corps. Dunford is the first Marine Corps officer to serve in four different four-star positions;the others include commander of the International Security Assistance Force and United States Forces –Afghanistan from February 2013 to August 2014,and as the thirty-second assistant commandant of the Marine Corps from October 23,2010 to December 15,2012. He has commanded several units,including the 5th Marine Regiment during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Robert Orton Work is an American national security professional who served as the 32nd United States Deputy Secretary of Defense for both the Obama and Trump administrations from 2014 to 2017. Prior to that,Work was the United States Under Secretary of the Navy from 2009 to 2013,and before that served as a colonel in the United States Marine Corps;Work retired in 2001 and worked as a civilian at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) and the George Washington University in various positions relating to military and strategic study. From 2013 to 2014,he was the CEO of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). After his time as Deputy Secretary of Defense,he went on to serve on the board of Raytheon.
