James Aranas

Zoren James Aranas (born April 29, 1992) is a Filipino professional pool player from Cavite, Philippines, nicknamed "Dodong Diamond". [1] [2] Aranas won the 2019 Super Billiard Expo Championship [3] and the 2023 World Cup of Pool with Johann Chua. [4]

Career

In 2018, Aranas secured his first international title after he defeated Chris Melling twice in the first Annual Asian Culture Day held at the Orleans Hotel and Casino Las Vegas. This was an opening event on the Efren Reyes retirement tour. [5] The following year, Aranas won the ten-ball event at the Super Billiard Expo Diamond Open, defeating Oscar Dominguez 13–10 in the final. [3]

In 2022, Aranas reached the finals of APP Asian 9-Ball Open held in Singapore but would lose to Taiwan's Ko Pin-yi, 11‍–‍13. [6]

At the 2023 World Cup of Pool, he was selected to represent the Philippines with partner Johann Chua. They reached the final, where they played the German team of Joshua Filler and Moritz Neuhausen. They won the final 11‍–‍7 in the final. [7] The team were the first to win the World Cup of Pool despite entering as an unseeded team. [8]

Personal life

Aranas was deported and banned from the United States for five years in February 2022. He had been using a tourist visa instead of one designed for an athlete. [9]

In 2024, the San Miguel Corporation-Philippine Sportswriters Association (SMC-PSA) recognised Aranas, Chua and Centeno for their remarkable achievements in billiards. [10] [11]

The SMC-PSA awards honour the distinction, commitment, and accomplishments of athletes and organisations that have made a substantial impact on the nation's success on the international stage.

Roberto Gomez is a professional pocket billiards player from Zamboanga City, Philippines. He competed in the final of both the 2007 WPA World Nine-ball Championships, and the 2007 World Cup of Pool. Gomez was the first qualifier to reach the final of the WPA World Nine-ball Championships.

Ko Pin-yi is a Taiwanese professional pool player. He became multiple World Champion in the disciplines of Nine-ball and Ten-ball in 2015.

John Schmidt is an American pool player, born in Keokuk, Iowa. Nicknamed "Mr. 600", specialising in straight pool, Schmidt held the record for the highest run made (626), until Jayson Shaw broke that record with a high run of 669 in January 2022. Schmidt won the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships in 2006 defeating Rodolfo Luat in the final. He was also part of the American team at two Mosconi Cups in 2006 and 2014.

Jayson Shaw is a Scottish professional pool player. In 2010, Shaw was a WPA World Blackball Champion.

Joshua Filler is a German professional pool player from Bönen, Germany. In 2018 Filler defeated Carlo Biado 13–10 to win the 2018 WPA World Nine-ball Championship. In 2017 he was the youngest player to win the China Open, and in 2018 he also won the 10-ball European Pool Championships. Filler became WPA and Euro Tour world number 1 in 2019, and later he reached the final of the 2019 WPA World Ten-ball Championship before losing 10–7 to Ko Ping-chung.

Roland Garcia is a professional pool player from Magalang, Philippines. Garcia reached the final of the 2017 WPA World Nine-ball Championship; but lost 5-13 to Carlo Biado. Garcia had also reached the quarter-final of the China Open in 2016, and the last 32 of the world nine-ball championship in 2018.

Skyler Woodward is an American professional pool player. At the 2017 World Cup of Pool, he was the runner up, alongside Shane Van Boening. Woodward has represented the United States each year in the Mosconi Cup since the 2015 Mosconi Cup. At the 2018 and 2019 events Woodward was voted the Most Valuable Player.

Mike Dechaine is an American professional pool player. Dechaine began playing pool aged 11, representing the USA on four occasions at the Mosconi Cup.

Han Yu is a Chinese professional pool player. She is a three time WPA World Nine-ball Championship women's champion, winning the event in 2013, 2016 and 2018. Han is also a semi-finalist in three further world championships, in 2017 in the nine-ball event, and 2011 and 2014 in ten-ball.

John Morra is a Canadian professional pool player. Morra has represented Canada at the World Cup of Pool on seven occasions, partnering Jason Klatt in 2011, 2012 and 2015, and Alex Pagulayan in 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2019. Morra is a multiple time champion on the Canadian 9-Ball pool tour. He reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Pool Masters. In 2018, Morra switched from playing right handed to left handed due to a shoulder injury. However, he still breaks with a right-handed stroke, as he is unable to generate the required amount of power breaking left-handed.

Jundel Mazon, aka "Janno", is a Filipino professional pool player from Cavite, Philippines. He was the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool Ten-ball Champion.
