Completed in 1983, the 1,946-foot (593 m) bridge carries State Route 71, which is also known as "James White Parkway" or "South Knoxville Boulevard". In 2007, [1] It was later renamed for James C. Ford, a former school superintendent, postmaster, and attorney. [2]

The vehicle bridge is one of three connecting Downtown Knoxville with South Knoxville, the other two being the Buck Karnes Bridge, (Alcoa Highway), and the Henley Bridge, (Chapman Hwy and Henley Street). Three other bridges also cross the Tennessee in the city: the Gay Street Bridge (now a pedestrian pathway), the Norfolk Southern Railway Bridge, [3] and the CSX Appalachian Subdivision Bridge.
