James "Joey" Caverly (born June 16, 1989) [1] is an American actor who has been deaf since birth.
Caverly was born and raised in Royal Oak, Michigan. [2] [3] He has been deaf since birth [1] and has an older sister who is also deaf, as well as two younger brothers who are hearing; [4] his parents are hearing, as well. [2]
In 2007, Caverly graduated from Lahser High School, [5] a mainstream school in the Bloomfield Hills School District with a program for deaf and hard of hearing students. [2] [1] In 2011, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts from Gallaudet University. [2] [3] [1]
As of 2022, Caverly lives in New York City. [5]
After graduating from Gallaudet University, Caverly joined National Theatre of the Deaf, where he both directed and acted in plays for two years. [2] [3] [1]
Following his time with National Theatre of the Deaf, Caverly performed with Huntington Theatre Company, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Studio Theatre, Kitchen Theatre Company, and SpeakEasy Stage Company. In 2018, he performed in a Broadway production of Children Of A Lesser God with Studio 54. [5]
Aside from acting, Caverly has also directed plays, including a production of Romeo and Juliet in both American Sign Language and spoken English for Community College of Baltimore County Community Theatre. [3] [6]
Caverly has spoken publicly about the lack of accurate representation of deafness in film and television, as well as on stage. He has discussed how, in many media portrayals, the deaf person is "the problem, they’re the issue in the story that needs to be fixed," which is not "the lens that the world needs to see." [3] [1]
Although he has experienced some barriers to his acting career due to his deafness, Caverly has stated, "As a deaf person I’m already invested in communicating through my body ... And when I’m on stage it’s really easy for me to find that piece of emotion because I do it on a day to day basis." [1]
Through Only Murders in the Building he had the opportunity to craft and artfully act as a complex deaf character. Caverly has previously indicated, "there are one too many creators who write disabled characters as two-dimensional: fixating on their disability without room for growth." [4] However, Caverly worked with series co-creator John Hoffman and director Cherien Dabis "to figure out how to portray Theo authentically without feeling like a gimmick. Aside from the dialogue changes, [the trio] talked about how a deaf person views the world," making the character creation "a true collaborative effort between the creators and [Caverly] to bring the character to life." [4]
In 2021, the series included an episode that had only one line of spoken dialogue and featured Caverly's character and ASL dialogues. [7] When asked about the episode, Caverly said, "Framing the entire episode in the perspective of a Deaf person is a subversive act" because "[i]t forces the audience to listen closely, but with their eyes instead of ears." [8] In crafting the episode, Caverly worked closely with director Cherien Dabis to more accurately represent his experiences as a deaf person, including camera angles. [8] Additionally, the episode's screenwriters, Stephen Markley and Ben Philippe, shied away from making Caverly's character too "exceptional," indicating that people with disabilities, much like able-bodied people, are imperfect but not villainous. [8]
Caverly appeared in the second season of Only Murders in the Building and further highlighted the existing misrepresentation of deafness in media. Importantly, Caverly's and Selena Gomez's characters attempt to converse with one another, but Gomez's character does not know sign language. Caverly's character informs her that he can only catch about a third of what she says based on reading lips. This scene, in particular, is important because "Communication is something that, when Deaf people are present on-screen, usually isn’t perceived as a problem when it is." [9]
After working on Only Murders in the Building, Caverly said that he is ready to explore more roles that do not fixate on the character's hearing loss, especially when the character's deafness does not elevate the plot. He asserts that "true inclusion would mean more disabled people in the writing room, behind the camera, and on the production team." [8] Including disabled people in every step of the process would, he claims, help to "dismantle" the "tired portrayal of disabled characters on TV." [8]
The Only Murders in the Building episode "The Boy from 6B" was given the Seal of Authentic Representation from the Ruderman Family Foundation for Caverly's portrayal of Theo, as an actor with a disability and at least five lines of dialogue. [10]
In 2022, Caverly was thought to be a possible contender for an Emmy Award nomination for his role on Only Murders in the Building, [11] which would have made him the first deaf actor to be nominated, though he did not receive a nomination. [12]

Deaf culture is the set of social beliefs, behaviors, art, literary traditions, history, values, and shared institutions of communities that are influenced by deafness and which use sign languages as the main means of communication. When used as a cultural label, especially within the culture, the word deaf is often written with a capital D and referred to as "big D Deaf" in speech and sign. When used as a label for the audiological condition, it is written with a lower case d. Carl G. Croneberg was among the first to discuss analogies between Deaf and hearing cultures in his appendices C and D of the 1965 Dictionary of American Sign Language.
Gary Malkowski is a former Canadian provincial politician. He represented the riding of York East in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 1995, as a member of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP). He was Canada's first deaf parliamentarian, and the first deaf parliamentarian in the world to address a legislature in a sign language, specifically American Sign Language. He was formerly a table tennis player who went onto represent Canada at the Deaflympics in 1977 and 1985.
Deaf President Now (DPN) was a student protest in March 1988 at Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C. The protest began on March 6, 1988, when the Board of Trustees announced its decision to appoint a hearing candidate, Elizabeth Zinser, over the other Deaf candidates, Irving King Jordan and Harvey Corson, as its seventh president.
Cherien Dabis is a Palestinian American actress, director, producer, and screenwriter. In 2022, she was nominated for the Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series award for her work on the television series Only Murders in the Building. In March 2022, Dabis was named Laureate for Cultural Excellence by the Takreem foundation for her work on authentic Arab representation in Hollywood.

The film starred Peter Wechsberg, who also serves as director and writer, under the pseudonym Peter Wolf. It was the first American Sign Language feature film ever made.
Russell Wayne Harvard is an American actor. He made his feature film debut in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood (2007), playing opposite Daniel Day-Lewis as his adopted son, H.W. Plainview. He played Mr. Wrench in the first and third seasons of the television series Fargo.

Disability in the arts is an aspect within various arts disciplines of inclusive practices involving disability. It manifests itself in the output and mission of some stage and modern dance performing-arts companies, and as the subject matter of individual works of art, such as the work of specific painters and those who draw.
The depiction of disability in the media plays a major role in molding the public perception of disability. Perceptions portrayed in the media directly influence the way people with disabilities are treated in current society. "[Media platforms] have been cited as a key site for the reinforcement of negative images and ideas in regard to people with disabilities."
The Deaf community over time has worked to improve the educational system for those who are Deaf and hard of hearing. The history of Deaf education dates back to Ancient Egypt where the deaf were respected and revered. In contrast, those who were deaf in Ancient Greece were considered a burden to society and put to death. The educational aspects of the deaf community has evolved tremendously and still continues to grow as the science of linguistics, educational research, new technologies, and laws, on local, national, and international levels are steadily being introduced. Strategies, however, remain controversial.

In medical contexts, the meaning of deafness is hearing loss that precludes a person from understanding spoken language, an audiological condition. In this context it is written with a lower case d. It later came to be used in a cultural context to refer to those who primarily communicate through sign language regardless of hearing ability, often capitalized as Deaf and referred to as "big D Deaf" in speech and sign. The two definitions overlap but are not identical, as hearing loss includes cases that are not severe enough to impact spoken language comprehension, while cultural Deafness includes hearing people who use sign language, such as children of deaf adults.
Theatre and disability is a subject focusing on the inclusion of disability within a theatrical experience, enabling cultural and aesthetic diversity in the arts. Showing disabled bodies on stage can be to some extent understood as a political aesthetic as it challenges the predominately abled audience's expectations as well as traditional theatre conventions. However, the performance of disabilities on stage has raised polarising debates about whether the performers are exposed and reduced to their disability or whether they have full agency of who they are and what they represent.
Jade Lovall is a fictional character from the BBC medical drama Casualty, portrayed by actress Gabriella Leon. She first appears in the twelfth episode of the thirty-third series, first broadcast on 3 November 2018. Leon was cast in June 2018 alongside Shaheen Jafargholi, who portrays Marty Kirkby. The role marks the actress' television debut. Initially portrayed as lazy and idle, Jade's characterisation develops as she is shown to be an independent, caring and compassionate young woman. Jade is the drama's first disabled, and deaf, regular character; Leon is also deaf and used her personal experiences to develop her character's story. The character uses a combition of Sign Supported English (SSE) and lip reading to communicate. Producers and Leon were keen to not make her disability a defining feature of the character.
Troy Michael Kotsur is an American actor. Born deaf, Kotsur made his acting debut in the late 1980s working with the National Theatre of the Deaf. His television debut was in a 2001 episode of Strong Medicine and his film debut was in the 2007 thriller The Number 23.
Gilbert Eastman was an American educator, actor, playwright, author, and television host. He acted in American Sign Language (ASL) plays and wrote many of them. Eastman taught and performed at the National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD), while writing and performing in many of their plays. In 1993, he won an Emmy Award for co-hosting the show Deaf Mosaic.
