James Sturgis Fearon was the Chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council in from 1898 to 1899.
Fearon was born in Sydney,New South Wales,Australia in 1849,the youngest son of Christopher Fearon and Grace Fearon.
Fearon moved to Shanghai at the age of 21 in 1870. He joined the staff of Augustin,Heard &Co in the tea department. When that firm when out of business,he formed the firm of Fearon,Lowe &co with Mr E.G. Lowe. After Lowe's death he was joined in partnership by Mr Daniel and in 1880,Fearon,Daniel &Co was established. In 1900 he moved to New York City to run Fearon Daniel &Co's business there. He returned to China in 1910 and was principally based in Tianjin. [1] He naturalised as an American in 1903.
In his younger days,Fearon was an active member of the Victoria Company of the Shanghai Fire Brigade. Later,he was part of a committee that was responsible for creating the public recreation ground at the Shanghai Race Course. He was later a Steward of the Shanghai Race Club. [2]
Fearon was elected to and became chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council in January 1898 and served until August 1899 when he resigned. [3] He was replaced as chairman by Frederick Anderson. [4]
Fearon died on 26 October 1920 in Tianjin and was buried at the Canton Road Cemetery [5] His grave was destroyed along with the cemetery during the Cultural Revolution.
Fearon married Emily Wood. They had two sons and one daughter. Emily died in 1934 in Shanghai and was buried at the Hongqiao Road Cemetery. [6]
The Shanghai International Settlement originated from the merger in the year 1863 of the British and American enclaves in Shanghai,in which British and American citizens would enjoy extraterritoriality and consular jurisdiction under the terms of unequal treaties agreed by both parties. These treaties were abrogated in 1943.
Edward Isaac Ezra was a wealthy Jewish businessman,who was the first member of the Shanghai Municipal Council who was actually born in China,and who was at one time "one of the wealthiest foreigners in Shanghai". According to one report,Ezra amassed a vast fortune estimated at from twenty to thirty million dollars primarily through the importation of opium,and successful real estate investment and management in early twentieth century Shanghai. Ezra was the largest stockholder and the managing director of Shanghai Hotels Ltd.,and its major financier,and controlled such hotels as the Astor House Hotel in Shanghai.
DeWitt Clinton Jansen,was a member of the Shanghai Municipal Council from 1893 until his death in November 1894;an Associate judge of the United States Consular Court in Shanghai;the proprietor of the Astor House Hotel in Shanghai,the first western hotel in China,from 1874 to his death in 1894;and was the first District Deputy Grand Master of the Cosmopolitan Lodge of Freemasons which began working in Shanghai in 1864. Jansen Road in Yangzepu was named in his honour.
Harry Edward Arnhold was for five years the chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council,the body that administered the Shanghai International Settlement in Shanghai,China;the chairman of Arnhold &Co.,which is now Arnhold Holdings Ltd.;and the chairman of the Shanghai Land Investment Company,which owned the Broadway Mansions apartment building in the Hongkou District of Shanghai. Arnhold was a close business associate of Sir Victor Sassoon,and managed various Sassoon enterprises.
Frederick Anderson was a Scottish football player and businessman in Shanghai and London. He served two terms as the Chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council.
Stirling Fessenden,an American lawyer who practiced in Shanghai,was the chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council from 1923 to 1929 and then Secretary-General of the Council from 1929 to 1939.
