James Hughes was an English footballer who played as a defender. He was born in Bootle in December 1885 [1] and played for Liverpool before signing for Crystal Palace in 1909. [1] Between then and 1920 Hughes made 200 appearances for Crystal Palace in the Southern League, scoring 15 times. [1] In 1920 Hughes moved on to Chatham.

He earned one representative cap with the Southern League XI. [2]

Hughes died in 1948, aged 62 or 63.

Edmund Goodman was an English football manager. He had his playing career at Aston Villa cut short by an injury, sustained playing for the reserves, which meant he had to have his leg amputated. After this, he became assistant secretary at Villa. When Crystal Palace F.C. were formed as a professional outfit in 1905, they asked Villa for help in setting up the club. The West Midlands club offered Goodman to Palace and he helped to appoint their first manager and also chairman. After two seasons he took over as manager and remained so for 18 years, becoming Palace's longest serving manager in the process.

The 1920–21 season was the 26th season of competitive football by Southampton, and the club's first in the Football League. At the end of the previous season, Southampton were one of a host of Southern League clubs elected to make up the new Third Division, finishing second in the inaugural season behind champions Crystal Palace. The Saints began the season strongly, winning seven of their first ten games to begin a lengthy run at the top of the league table until the end of the year. The club began to lose against several teams lower in the table in December, dropping a position as Palace continued to win the majority of their games. Crystal Palace Football Club is a professional association football club based in Selhurst, South London, England. Founded in 1905, the club first played in the Southern League, and competed in this league for eleven seasons before being elected to play in the Football League in 1920 as members of the Third Division. Palace won the Third Division in their first season immediately gaining promotion to the Second Division. The team achieved their highest league placing in the 1990–91 season when they finished in 3rd place of the First Division. In 1992 the 22 teams in the First Division broke away from the Football League to form the Premier League, Palace were relegated from the inaugural season in 20th place, level on points with 19th place Oldham Athletic but with an inferior goal difference. The team would rejoin the Premier League and be relegated after one season in 1994, 1997 and 2004. They won the 2013 Football League Championship play-off final to once again be promoted into the Premier League where they currently compete.
