James M. Alexander is a retired American judge who served on Michigan's Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Oakland County for 19 years. He served in the Family Court for his first nine years,and in the newly created Business Court for his last seven as one of its original judges,writing hundreds of business court legal opinions over that time. He has held significant leadership positions as a judge,and received numerous awards and honors for his public service.
In 2001,Michigan Govenor John Engler appointed Alexander to the Circuit Court of Oakland County,a trial level court of general jurisdiction. [1] [2] He was reelected three times,and served on that court from 2001 until his retirement in 2020. He was originally assigned to the Family Court eventually serving as its Presiding Judge and its Chief Judge Pro Tem. Alexander was appointed to the Business Division (Business Court) by Michigan's Supreme Court in 2013 and reappointed in 2019. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] Alexander retired in 2020,and was succeeded on the Oakland County Business Court by Judge Michael Warren. [8]
The Business Division is a legislatively created specialized business court within each of Michigan's circuit courts having more than three judges. [9] [10] The Business Courts are courts of limited jurisdiction primarily hearing business and commercial disputes before specialized judges. Alexander served on the Oakland County Business Court from its inception in 2013 until his retirement in 2020. He has emphasized the communications and camaraderie among all of the state's business court judges,and publishing business court opinions,as keys to the business court's success. [10] Alexander himself issued hundreds of legal opinions as a business court judge. [11] He has been described as a role model for other judges,and a key to the success of the Oakland County Business Court. [12] Nationally,he is a member of the American College of Business Court Judges. [13]
Alexander was president of the Michigan Judges Association in 2010, [14] an organization representing circuit and appellate court judges across Michigan. [15] He was elected chair of the State Bar Judicial Council in 2014. [16] He was among leading lawyers and judges selected to serve on the State Bar of Michigan's Judicial Crossroads Task Force in 2009. [17] In 2017,he received an Excellence Award from the Michigan Judges Association for "judges who have excelled in trial and docket management,legal scholarship,and contributions to the profession and the community." [18]
Alexander served on Governor Engler's staff as Director of the Governor's Southeast Michigan Office,from 1999 to 2001. He was chairman of the Republican Committee of Oakland County from 1988 to 1994. He served as co-chair of the Oakland County Executive's Ethics Commission. [1] [13] [12]
Alexander was in the private practice of law with private law firms from 1971 to 1999,including his own. He became a solo practitioner in 1981 doing commercial collection work,and joined the firm of Foster Swift in 1991,where he was a shareholder,headed its government relations group,and practiced in commercial litigation,and arbitration. After retiring as a judge,Alexander joined the private alternative dispute resolution provider JAMS,providing services as an arbitrator,mediator,and special master/referee. [19]
Alexander received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami (Ohio) University in 1970,and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 1973. [12]

Albert J. Matricciani, Jr. is a retired United States judge in the state of Maryland, who served both at the trial and appellate levels of Maryland's state court system. As a trial level judge, Matricianni was in charge of the Baltimore Circuit Court's Family Law Division for five years, and was later instrumental in creating the statewide Business and Technology Case Management Program. He was President of the Baltimore City Bar Association, and served in leadership in numerous entities and organizations of a legal or charitable nature.
Brent Thomas Adams was a United States judge in Nevada's Second Judicial District, located in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. He served for 25 years, eventually becoming Chief Judge of that court. He innovated with the creation and development of a drug court, created a forum for early case resolution, created and chaired a Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, served as the District Court's first business court judge and continuing to serve as a business court judge until his retirement over 10 years later.
Heather A. Welch is a United States judge on the Marion County, Indiana Superior Court, located in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was instrumental in developing Indiana's Commercial Courts, on which she served as one of its initial judges until her retirement. She has served as a judicial leader in Indiana and nationally, among other things being the incoming chair of the American Bar Association's Judicial Division in 2024, and has received numerous awards for her judicial service.
Christopher Paul Yates is an American judge in the state of Michigan. He has served as both a trial level and appellate judge. He was one of Michigan's first business court judges, serving in that role for ten years, and later developing a national presence and influence as a business court judge. Most recently, he was assigned to the specialized Michigan Court of Claims, to deal with litigation involving governmental entities. He served in two prestigious judicial clerkships, has held positions of significance outside of his judgeships, and has received numerous awards as a judge.
Gail A. Andler is a retired American judge who served in the Orange County, California Superior Court for over 22 years. She was assigned to its specialized complex civil litigation program for ten years, from 2007 until her retirement. She has been a leader in the national community of specialized business court judges, and has been acknowledged with numerous awards for her work as a trial judge. Andler has been recognized for her service to at-risk children and youth.
Timothy Sean Driscoll is an American judge, serving as a justice in the trial level Supreme Court of Nassau County, New York. He has served in that court's specialized Commercial Division from 2009 to the present. He is a leader among New York judges in the Commercial Division, and in the national community of specialized business court judges. Elizabeth Hazlitt Emerson is a retired American judge who served on the New York Supreme Court of Suffolk County for 28 years, 21 of those years presiding in that court's Commercial Division, a specialized business court. She was instrumental in establishing the Suffolk County Commercial Division, and has played an important part in developing New York's Commercial Division statewide. She worked at prestigious New York law firms before being elected to the bench for two 14-year terms, and has been recognized and honored for her work as a judge and judicial administrator.
Gill S. Freeman is a retired American judge who served for nearly 20 years in the Circuit Court of Miami-Dade County, Florida. She is the recipient of numerous awards as a judge, and has held a wide range of significant leadership positions, in addition to serving as a judge. She was the first judge assigned to Miami's newly established business court in 2007, and co-chairs a bar association task force on making recommendations about implementing business courts statewide in Florida.
Lisa Sharon Walsh is an American judge, serving on the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court in Miami-Dade County, Florida since 2011. She has been Administrative Judge of that court's Appellate Division, a judge of its International Commercial Arbitration Court since 2017, and a business court judge in its Complex Business Litigation Division since 2023. She has received numerous awards as a judge, has held significant leadership positions, and has provided judicial education programming to other judges. In 2024, Walsh was the highest rated judge in the Miami-Dade Bar's Judicial Poll.
