James MacDonald Spence QC is a lawyer, arbitrator and mediator. He was formerly a Justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. [1]
Spence earned a BA and an LLB. He was awarded an Honorary LLD in 2001 by the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Spence was a partner at the firm that became Torys from 1976 until 1993. He was appointed a QC in 1984.
Spence was first elected a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1983 and became the 51st Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada, serving from 1990 to 1992. [2] He was the Director of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada from 1989 to 1993.
Spence was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice in 1993. He retired from the bench in September 2015 and currently practises as an arbitrator and mediator. [3]
In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth countries, a Queen's Counsel during the reign of a queen, or King's Counsel during the reign of a king, is a lawyer who is appointed by the monarch of the country to be one of ’Her [His] Majesty's Counsel learned in the law’. The position originated in England. Some Commonwealth countries have either abolished the position, or re-named it so as to remove monarchical connotations, for example, ’Senior Counsel’ or ’Senior Advocate’.
Osgoode Hall Law School, commonly shortened to Osgoode, is the law school of York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The school was originally founded by the Law Society of Upper Canada, and named for William Osgoode, an Oxford University graduate and barrister of Lincoln's Inn who was the first to serve as the Chief Justice of Upper Canada. The school signed an agreement of affiliation with York University in 1965 following a decision by the provincial government requiring all law schools to be affiliated with a university.

Marc Nadon LL.L. is a supernumerary judge on the Canadian Federal Court of Appeal. He has practised law in both Quebec and the United Kingdom, focusing on maritime and transportation law. He was also an arbitrator and former lecturer in law at the Université de Sherbrooke. Nadon was nominated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to be a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in October 2013. Following controversy about the appointment, the federal government referred the constitutionality of the appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada. In their decision in Reference Re Supreme Court Act, ss 5 and 6, the Supreme Court quashed his appointment, concluding he did not meet the eligibility criteria provided in the Supreme Court Act.
