James Madison Middle School located in the Franklin-Colonial neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia, USA, is situated on a large hill with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Opened in 1970, it is a magnet school for technology and is part of the Roanoke City Public Schools. The school's athletics teams are the Matadors.

  • 2000-01 - 6th out of 141 Schools [2]
  • 2002-03 - 5th out of 108 schools [3]

In the international Odyssey of the Mind competition in 2001, James Madison Middle School won through to represent the US and placed 3rd out of a field of 57 teams representing the United States. [4]

James Madison has a notable chess team that in 2005 were runners up in the Virginia State K-8 Team Championships, losing by half a point. [5]

Pascal Charbonneau is a Canadian chess grandmaster. He has won two Canadian Chess Championships, in 2002 and 2004, and has represented Canada in five Chess Olympiads: 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008.

Bryan Stinespring is an American football coach. He is the Activities Director for Alleghany High School in Covington Virginia. He was the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at the University of Delaware, as well as formerly the run game coordinator and offensive line coach at James Madison University from 2016 to 2017. He was previously the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for the Virginia Tech Hokies football program. He was a full-time member of head coach Frank Beamer's staff from 1993-2015. Throughout his tenure in Blacksburg, Stinespring held a number of other positions including offensive line coach (1993–2005), recruiting coordinator (1994–2001), assistant head coach (2001) and offensive coordinator (2002–2012).

Julio Catalino Sadorra is a Filipino chess grandmaster. He competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2017 where he was seeded 101 and where he lost to the 28th-seeded Super GM Maxim Matlakov, 0.5-1.5. Sadorra has represented the Philippines at the Chess Olympiad since 2014. He tied for first place in the U.S. Open Chess Championship in 2013.

Mackenzie "Mac" Molner is an American chess grandmaster and chess instructor. Chess coach Michael Khodarkovsky helped Molner develop his competitive chess play. Molner won the Denker Tournament of High School Champions as a sophomore in 2004. He completed his final grandmaster norm in 2013, tying for first in the U.S. Open Chess Championship, held near Madison, Wisconsin that year.
