Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda's largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. The main administrative block was gutted by fire in September 2020 and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.
Charles "Mase" Onyango-Obbo, also Charles Onyango Obbo, is a Ugandan author, journalist, and former Editor of Mail & Guardian Africa. Mwesigwa Rukutana, is a Ugandan lawyer and politician. He served as Deputy Attorney General of Uganda from 1 March 2015 to January 2020. He replaced Fred Ruhindi, who was appointed Attorney General. He was transferred from attorney general chambers to Minister of State for Labour until June 2021 when he was dropped from the cabinet. He was appointed to the post of deputy attorney general on 1 March 2015, Prior to that, between 27 May 2011 and 1 March 2015, he served as the State Minister for Labor in the Ugandan Cabinet. He was appointed to this position on 27 May 2011. He replaced Emmanuel Otala, who was dropped from the Cabinet. Prior to that, he served as the State Minister for Higher Education, from 16 February 2009 until 27 May 2011.
Benjamin Josses Odoki was the tenth Chief Justice of Uganda from 2001 to 2013.

Jennifer Semakula Musisi is a Ugandan lawyer and public administrator. She is the first City Leader in Residence at Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative at the Ash Center of the Harvard Kennedy School, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. She was appointed to this position in January 2019.
The Bombo shooting was a mass murder that occurred in Bombo, Uganda on March 9, 2013. The perpetrator, Patrick Okot Odoch, a private in the Uganda People's Defence Force, shot and killed nine people in a bar and, while fleeing, a tenth victim. Odoch fled and was arrested ten days later, and was charged with murder and attempted murder. On June 4, Odoch was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 90 years imprisonment.
Fred Mukasa Mbidde is a Ugandan lawyer, human-rights activist, mass communication specialist, motivational speaker and politician. He is an elected member of the 3rd East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), representing the Republic of Uganda. He has been in this office since June 2012. He serves on three EALA committees: the Committee on Communication, Trade and Investments; the Committee on Legal, Rules and Privileges; and the Committee on Regional Affairs and Conflict Resolution. He is the chairperson of the Committee on Communication, Trade and Investments.
Doris Akol is a Ugandan lawyer and administrator. In December 2021, she was appointed as Technical Assistance Advisor at the International Monetary Fund, in Washington, DC, United States.
Joan Namazzi Kagezi, was a Ugandan lawyer and prosecutor. She was assassinated on 30 March 2015 in Kiwaatule, a Kampala suburb, on her way home. At the time of her death, she was the assistant director of public prosecution and head of the International Criminal Division in Uganda's Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
Richard Buteera, also Richard Butera, is a Ugandan lawyer and judge who has served as a member of the Supreme Court of Uganda since September 2017. Immediately prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, he served as a Justice of the Uganda Court of Appeal.
Florence Ndagire is a female Ugandan lawyer, who works as a legal researcher and human rights lawyer at the United Nations (UN) based in Geneva, Switzerland. Ndagire, who is totally blind, also serves as the chairperson of the UN Women Regional Group, for Eastern and Southern Africa, comprising twelve countries. She is the first visually impaired person, male or female to qualify and receive licensure as a lawyer in Uganda.
Barishaki Bonny Cheborion is a Ugandan lawyer and judge, who serves as a justice of the Court of Appeal of Uganda, since September 2015.
Percy Night Tuhaise, is a Ugandan lawyer and judge who, on 8 February 2018, was appointed by president Yoweri Museveni, to the Uganda Court of Appeal which also doubles as the country's Constitutional Court. Prior to her current position she served on the High Court of Uganda.
Ezekiel Muhanguzi is a Ugandan lawyer and judge, on the Court of Appeal of Uganda, which doubles as the country's Constitutional Court. He was appointed to that position by president Yoweri Museveni on 8 February 2018. Prior to his elevation to the Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court, Justice Muhanguzi served on the High Court of Uganda, retiring from there in February 2017, after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 65 years.
Anne Abeja, is a Ugandan lawyer and corporate executive, who, since October 2013, serves as the Company Secretary and head of the legal department at Housing Finance Bank, a Ugandan retail commercial bank.
Bwowe Ivan, is a Ugandan politician, lawyer who served as the 80th Makerere University Guild President 2014 to 2015. He is known for his negotiations with President Museveni that resulted into increase in the lecturers pay, challenging tuition increments and unfair policies which negatively impacted students welfare.
Mercy Kyomugasho Kainobwisho, is a Ugandan lawyer, business administrator and corporate executive, who serves as the registrar general and executive director of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), effective December 2020. Prior to her current position, she served as the director of intellectual property at URSB.
Kiryowa Kiwanuka Nsumikambi Mugambe, commonly known as Kiryowa Kiwanuka, is a Ugandan lawyer, businessman and politician who serves as the Attorney General of Uganda in the Ugandan Cabinet. He was appointed to that position on 8 June 2021, replacing William Byaruhanga, who was dropped from cabinet.
Okot Moses Junior Bitek is a Ugandan lawyer and politician who serves as a member of Parliament representing Kioga Constituency Amolatar District. He was elected on 14 January 2021. He is a member of the FDC party.

After his first day in the courtroom, the defense lawyer for The Monitor editors, James Nangwala, was shot by unidentified gunmen in front of his home. He was hit in the shoulder, and Mafabi adjourned the trial until January 2000.
