James Shaibu Barka (born 1961) was elected a member of the Adamawa State,Nigeria House of Assembly,and was appointed Speaker. When Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako's election was nullified in February 2008,Barka became Acting Governor,handing back to Nyako after he had been reelected on 29 April 2008.
Barka was elected to the Adamawa Assembly for the Hong constituency. In July 2003,as Majority Leader of the Assembly,he successfully moved a motion to dissolve the State Civil Service Commission,State Independent Electoral Commission and the Judicial Service Commission,replacing them by management committees with members nominated by the governor. After the Election Petition Appeal Tribunal upheld the nullification of governor Nyako's election,Barka was sworn in as Acting Governor on 26 February 2008. [2] [3] Barka immediately sacked all of Nyako's appointees including commissioners,committee chairmen,area administrators,special advisers and assistants. [4] Barka handed back power to Nyako on 29 April 2008 after the former governor had won the re-run election. [5]
In March 2010,the House of Assembly passed a law to award Barka a lifetime pension for his service as governor. The law was disputed as being unconstitutional. [6] In April 2010,he was being considered a possible candidate for governor in the April 2011 elections. [7]

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Sokoto State was held on February 23,2019,to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Sokoto State. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko representing Sokoto North,Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South and Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir representing Sokoto East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress. But the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division on 30 October 2019 sacked Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South on the platform of All Progressives Congress. Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party replaced the sacked senator.
The 2019 Nigerian Senate election were held in all 109 senatorial districts where voters elected senators using first-past-the-post voting. Most elections were held on February 23,2019,with some elections running into February 24 while others had supplementary or rerun elections that took place at a later date. The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Adamawa State will be held on 25 February 2023,to elect the 3 federal Senators from Adamawa State,one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election,as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives;with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
