James Sissons (born 26 March 2007) is a Maltese footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for the academy of English club Chesterfield. He has represented Malta at U15, U16, U19 and U21 level and has been named in senior national team squads. [1] [2]

Club career

Sissons came through the youth ranks at Melita. [3]

On 22 August 2025, Chesterfield announced he had joined their academy for the 2025–26 season. [4] [5]

On 5 November 2025, local media in Derbyshire reported he had joined National League North side Alfreton Town on a Youth Development Dual Loan and had been named on the bench. [6] [7]

International career

Youth

Sissons featured for Malta U15 in 2022, including friendlies against Gibraltar noted by the Malta FA. [8]

In April 2023, he appeared for Malta U16 at a UEFA development tournament, with the MFA match report highlighting early saves against Estonia. [9]

He progressed to Malta U19 and was listed in the squad for the UEFA U19 European Championship Qualifying Round in October 2024, including the tie versus Poland in Grudziądz. [10]

In October 2025, Sissons started for Malta U21 in a UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Georgia; MFA’s report notes an early save from a free-kick and lists him in the starting XI. [11] [12]

Senior

Sissons received senior Malta call-ups in 2025. He was named in the final squad for the September window under coach Emilio De Leo, [13] and was also listed among substitutes for fixtures against Lithuania, the Netherlands and San Marino on the Malta FA match centre. A tall goalkeeper (listed at 1.97 m (6 ft 6 in) by databases), Sissons has been noted by club media for his size and development through international exposure. [2] [4]
