Jammu and Kashmir Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (JKIDFC) Limited was formed in 2018 to speed-up pending, unfunded or languishing infrastructure development projects in Jammu and Kashmir. JKIDFC is a registered corporation under the Companies Act that is mandated to raise funds up to 8,000 crore (US$1.1 billion), which are guaranteed by the state government, for funding infrastructure development in Jammu and Kashmir. [1] [2] [3] Some of the projects which JKIDFC is undertaking have been pending for 25 years old. [3]

On 9 August 2020, it was announced the that "over 600 projects of immense public importance", projects which had been left languishing for up to 25 years, had been completed. These projects include extension/construction/widening of roads, bridges, water supply schemes and flats. Other major projects included development of industrial estates, healthcare infrastructure, entrepreneurship development institutes, sports infrastructure, education infrastructure and hand pumps across the region. [4] [5] [6] In financial year 2019–20, over 1200 projects worth 2,280 crore (US$320 million) were financed under JKIDFC. [7]

2014 India–Pakistan floods

In September 2014, the Kashmir region suffered disastrous floods across many of its districts caused by torrential rainfall. The Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the Pakistani territories of Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Punjab were affected by these floods. By 24 September 2014, nearly 277 people in India and about 280 people in Pakistan had died due to the floods.

The Srinagar Metro is a rapid transit planned for the city of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The plans for the Srinagar Metro have been finalised with the work expected to start in 2020. The proposed network will have two corridors. Each corridor of Srinagar metro will have 12 stations each with the total cost expected to be around ₹5,000 crore. Former Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief 'Metro Man' E Sreedharan has been appointed the project head.

Smart Cities Mission

National Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with the mission to develop smart cities across the country, making them citizen friendly and sustainable. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments of the respective cities. The mission initially included 100 cities, with the deadline for completion of the projects set between 2019 and 2023. The effective combined completion of all projects is now at 11%.

Media in Jammu and Kashmir

Media in Jammu and Kashmir (JK) consists of media houses such as Greater Kashmir and Rising Kashmir, Daily Excelsior and radio stations such as AIR Srinagar, AIR Jammu, Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM, Red FM 93.5 and Radio Sharda. DD Kashir is state television broadcaster. Major private channels are News18 Urdu and Gulistan News. Various books have been written about the region, a large number being related to the Literature of Kashmir, Culture of Kashmir, Lal Ded and Nund Rishi. Koshur, Dogri, Punjabi, Pahari, Gojri, Hindi-Urdu and English are the main languages used.

All India Institutes of Medical Sciences university system in India

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are a group of autonomous government public medical colleges of higher education. These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance. AIIMS New Delhi, the forerunner institute, was established in 1956. Since then, 22 more institutes were announced. As of January 2020, fifteen institutes are operating and eight more are expected to become operational until 2025. Proposals were made for six more AIIMS.

B. V. R. Subrahmanyam is a 1987-batch Chhattisgarh-cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who is empanelled as a secretary in the central government and is experienced with conflict zone administration. He is currently the Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He took over from B.B. Vyas on 20 June 2018 following the collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition government. He has previously served in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) under both Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi. He has been instrumental in containing insurgency in Chhattisgarh in the 2010s.

Jammu and Kashmir State Land Act, 2001 commonly known as Roshni Act was promulgated during Chief Minister Farooq Adbullah's government in 2001. The law granted ownership of Jammu and Kashmir state land to illegal encroachers with the aim of raising money for power projects upon payment of a sum to be determined by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. The cut-off year was set as 1990 by the Government of Farooq Abdullah, which in 2005 was relaxed to 2004 by the then PDP-Congress Government and further relaxed to 2007 by the Government of Ghulam Nabi Azad. The act got the unofficial name of "Roshni Act" from the J&K Government's said plan of using the funds raised from this to fund power projects in the state.
