The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) was a collegiate athletic conference which historically operated exclusively in the state of West Virginia, but briefly had one Kentucky member in its early years, and expanded into Pennsylvania in its final years. It participated in the NCAA's Division II, but held its final athletic competitions in spring 2013, and officially disbanded on September 1 of that year. Its football-playing members announced in June 2012 that they planned to withdraw to form a new Division II conference effective at the end of the 2012–13 season; this led to a chain of conference moves that saw all but one of the WVIAC's members find new conference homes.
AIK Fotboll, more commonly known simply as AIK, an abbreviation for Allmänna Idrottsklubben, is a Swedish football club competing in Allsvenskan, the top flight of Swedish football. The club was founded 1891 in Stockholm and the football department was formed in 1896. AIK's home ground is Friends Arena, located in Solna, Metropolitan Stockholm.
Hammarby IF Fotbollförening, more commonly known as Hammarby Fotboll or Hammarby, is a Swedish football club from Stockholm founded in 1915. Djurgårdens IF Ishockeyförening – commonly known as Djurgårdens IF, Djurgården Hockey, Djurgården – is a professional ice hockey team based in Stockholm, Sweden, affiliated with the Djurgårdens IF umbrella organization. Djurgården is currently playing in the Swedish premier ice hockey league, the Swedish Hockey League. Djurgården is the most successful Swedish hockey team of all time, as 16-time Swedish champions, 12-time runners-up, and leaders of the marathon table for the top flight of Swedish hockey. The ice hockey department was first established in 1922 and has since been playing in the Swedish league system, with the exception of four years in the 1930s when the hockey department was temporarily dissolved.
Allmänna Idrottsklubben Ishockeyförening, is the ice hockey department of sports club Allmänna Idrottsklubben based in Stockholm, Sweden. Since 2014, AIK's men's team compete in HockeyAllsvenskan, the second tier of ice hockey in Sweden, following a four-year spell in the top flight, the SHL. The women's team competes in Riksserien, the highest division of women's ice hockey. AIK's home games are mainly played at Hovet, which seats 8,050 spectators, though some high-profile games may be played at Avicii Arena which has a larger capacity of 13,850.
Idrottsklubben Brage, also known as IK Brage or simply Brage, is a Swedish football club located in Borlänge. The club is affiliated with Dalarnas Fotbollförbund and play their home games at Domnarvsvallen. The club colours, reflected in their crest and kit, are green and white. The club can be seen as a continuation of IK Blixt which was founded in the early 1920s but merged into Domnarvets GoIF in 1923. Two years later the merger was split and IK Blixt changed their name to IK Brage, after the Norse god Bragi. The club has played a total of 18 seasons in Allsvenskan, which is the highest level of the Swedish football league system. They currently play in the second highest level (Superettan) where the season lasts from April to November. IK Brage also recently spent time in the third division Division 1 (2014–2017) and fourth division Division 2 between 2005 and 2009) but has mainly played in the two highest Swedish divisions since its foundation.

The West Virginia State Yellow Jackets are the athletic teams that represent West Virginia State University, located in Institute, West Virginia, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Yellow Jackets compete as members of the Mountain East Conference for all ten varsity sports. West Virginia State was a founding member of the conference following the demise of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2013. WVSU's main rivals are University of Charleston (WV), Central State University (Ohio), and Kentucky State University.
The Davis & Elkins Senators are the athletic teams that represent Davis & Elkins College, located in Elkins, West Virginia, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Senators compete as members of the Mountain East Conference for all sports except men's lacrosse, which is an affiliate of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. In 2019, the Senators joined the MEC, thereby reuniting with most of their historic rivals.
Ohio Valley University was a private Christian college located between Parkersburg and Vienna in West Virginia. Founded in 1958, the school integrated education with teachings of the Christian faith. The college was physically located on two separate campuses totalling 267 acres (1.1 km2). OVU offered bachelor's degrees in more than 30 different subject areas. The college was currently accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, but has closed as January 2022. The college was placed under academic probation in 2020 by the Higher Learning Commission due to financial struggles. In December 2021, the OVU Board of Directors voted to close the college after the Fall 2021 semester. The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission voted to revoke OVU's authority to grant degrees shortly after. Seniors will be allowed to finish their degrees without the loss of any credit hours in the spring semester of 2022 at several other institutions of higher education related to Churches of Christ through "teach out" agreements.
The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) was named the 24th NCAA Division II conference and operates in the Great Lakes and East South Central States regions of the United States. The G-MAC began conference play in the 2012-13 academic year hosting 12 championships and continued to work through the educational assessment program. The conference received approval and became an active Division II conference in 2013-14, hosting 17 championships.

It consists of 12 schools, mostly in West Virginia with other members in Maryland, North Carolina, and Ohio.
The Wheeling Cardinals are the athletic teams that represent Wheeling University, located in Wheeling, West Virginia, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Cardinals compete as members of the Mountain East Conference for all 21 varsity sports. Wheeling was an early member of the Mountain East following the 2013 demise of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), of which the university had been a member since 1957.
Fred Schmalz is a retired American soccer coach. He coached at the collegiate level for 33 years. He was a National Coach of the Year and has been named to six Halls of Fame for his play and his coaching successes.
Göran Erik Göransson is a Swedish former footballer and manager who most notably played for AIK and managed the Sweden U21 team. He made 363 official appearances for AIK, helping them win two Svenska Cupen titles and finishing first during the 1983 regular Allsvenskan season.
Jan Peter Nilsson is a Swedish former footballer who played as a forward. He made 12 Allsvenskan appearances for Västra Frölunda IF in 1999, scoring one goal. A former college athlete, he holds the NCAA-era record at Wilmington College for the most goals scored in a single season with 20 goals in 17 games.
Rune Larsson was a Swedish football, ice hockey and bandy player, best known for representing Hammarby IF and AIK in all sports.
Bernt Åke Ljung is a Swedish former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He represented IK Brage, AIK, and Vasalunds IF during a career that spanned between 1976 and 1993. A full international between 1982 and 1984, he won seven caps for the Sweden national team.
