Jan Malcolm is the health commissioner of Minnesota, which has over 1,500 employees and a budget of over $600 million. [1] She was appointed as the commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Health by previous governor Mark Dayton in 2018. [2]

Jan Malcolm has served under three separate governors of Minnesota. [3] She is currently leading the Department of Health of Minnesota. She was appointed by Mark Dayton after her predecessor, Ed Ehlinger, resigned. [4] She was originally brought on to help with complaints about elder abuse, which she was able to solve after eight months. [4] Since the COVID-19 Pandemic began she has started facing backlash from the Republican party. [3] As the COVID-19 Pandemic continues, the threat of Republicans outing Malcolm has increased. [5] Many Republicans are not happy with the way she has been running the COVID-19 relief. [5]

Personal life

She attended high school at Minnetonka High School and went to Dartmouth College for pre-med. [4] She was married to Kris Carlton, who died in 2019. [6] In June 2021, Malcolm was awarded the Lavender Community Pride Award for LGBTQ Individual. [7]

Mark Brandt Dayton is an American politician who served as the 40th governor of Minnesota from 2011 to 2019. Margaret Anderson Kelliher is an American politician, Director of the Minneapolis Department of Public Works, former Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, she represented District 60A, which includes portions of the city of Minneapolis in Hennepin County, located in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. First elected in 1999, she served until 2011, also serving as the Speaker from 2007 to 2011. She is the second woman to hold the position of House speaker. She was an unsuccessful candidate for the DFL nomination for Governor of Minnesota in the 2010 gubernatorial election, losing to former Senator Mark Dayton. On June 5, 2018, she registered as a candidate for the DFL nomination to the U.S. House of Representatives in Minnesota's 5th congressional district, losing to Ilhan Omar.

The shutdown started at midnight on July 1, and ended after a budget bill was passed and signed on July 20.
