Jan H. van Bemmel (born 17 November 1938) is a Dutch former professor of medical informatics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He was rector magnificus of the Erasmus University Rotterdam between 2000 and 2003.
Van Bemmel was born in Rotterdam on 17 November 1938. [1] [2] He studied physics at Delft University of Technology, where he obtained a degree in 1963. He subsequently started working for the Medical-Physical Institute of the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). At the institute he was head of the workgroup of biomedical signalanalysis. Six years later he earned his Doctor title at the faculty of physics and mathematics of the Radboud University Nijmegen. [2] His thesis concerned challenges of signal processing applied to fetal electrocardiography. [3]
In 1973 Van Bemmel stopped working for TNO and was appointed as professor of medical informatics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In 1987 Van Bemmel became professor of medical informatics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He served as rector magnificus of the University between 2000 and 2003. [2]
His research has amongst other topics focused on biomedical signal and image analysis, medical information systems and electronic health records. [2] He started his work on the latter during the 1980s and later expanded into the signal and image analytics. [3] The American Medical Informatics Association has called him "instrumental in the development of medical informatics as a discipline". [4] He served as president of the International Medical Informatics Association from 1998 to 2001. [3]
Van Bemmel was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1987. [5] He became a corresponding member of the National Academy of Medicine in 1991. [2]
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, being founded in 1880. Peter Nijkamp is a Dutch economist, Professor of Regional Economics and Economic Geography at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, a fellow of the Tinbergen Institute and President of the Governing Board of the Netherlands Research Council (NWO). He is ranked among the top 100 economists in the world according to IDEAS/RePEc, and is by far the most prolific economist. Towards the end of his career at the VU university Nijkamp faced accusations of self-plagiarism and VU-appointed investigators have criticised referencing methods in some of his work.

Erik Johan Anton (Erik) Scherder is a Dutch professor of neuropsychology who is connected to the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (VU). Scherder followed his education to physiotherapist in the late seventies after which he worked in the Valeriuskliniek in Amsterdam. Afterwards he followed the study psychology at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam with a specialization in neuropsychology, in which he promoted in 1995.
Wiro J. Niessen is a Dutch scientist in biomedical image analysis and machine learning. He is full professor at both Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam and Delft University of Technology. He is founder and scientific lead of Quantib, an AI company in medical imaging. In 2015 he received the Simon Stevin Meester Award from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. From 2016 to 2019 he was president of the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions Society. In 2017 he was elected to The Netherlands Royal Academy of Arts & Sciences. He is director of the AI platform of the European Organization for Biomedical Imaging Research.
Hendrik Klaas Aldert"Henk"Visser was a Dutch pediatrician. He was professor of pediatrics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Erasmus MC between 1967 and 1995.
Andries Frans Sanders is a Dutch psychologist. In the 1980s he was professor at RWTH Aachen Technical University and served as director of its Institut für Psychologie. Sanders was professor of psychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam between 1989 and 1998.
Anne Lydia "Annelien" Bredenoord is a Dutch politician and professor of biomedical ethics. She is the current rector magnificus of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since 2019, she serves as the parliamentary leader of Democrats 66 (D66) in the Senate.

Jacobus Willibrordus"Jaap"Zwemmer is a Dutch fiscal jurist. He was a professor of tax law at the University of Amsterdam between 1980 and 2006. He also served as interim rector magnificus of the university in 2007. Zwemmer furthermore was a part time tax judge and wrote fiscal opinions. After his retirement he dealth with academic integrity matters. He additionally spent spells on the supervisory boards of various medical institutions.
