Jane Kiggundu, is a Ugandan lawyer and judge on the High Court of Uganda. She was appointed to that court by president Yoweri Museveni, in May 2008. [1]

Background and education

She graduated from the Faculty of Law of Makerere University, Uganda's largest and oldest public university, with a Bachelor of Laws degree. She then obtained a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, in Kampala, Uganda's capital city. Following that, she was admitted to the Uganda Bar.

Career

Beginning circa 2000, Ms Kiggundu took up employment in the Uganda Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. [2] Between 2003 and 2007, she served as the Administrator General, in an acting capacity. [3] She then served as the Solicitor General from 2007 until 2008, also in acting capacity. [4]

While on the High Court, she served as the executive director of the Judicial Studies Institute, before she served in the Family Division of the court. [5] [6] As of May 2017, she was serving in the International Crimes Division of the High Court. [7] She was a member of the three-judge tribunal that tried 14 men who were accused of carrying out the murders of Muslim clerics in Uganda, between 2014 and 2015. The other two judges on the panel were Justice Ezekiel Muhanguzi (lead judge) and Justice Percy Tuhaise (member). [8] [9]

Family

In 1988, Jane married Patrick Kiggundu, a Ugandan attorney, who at one time served as the Corporate Secretary of the New Vision Group, and was a Member of Parliament for Kyotera Constituency. They had three children together. Patrick fathered another four children with other partners. [2] Patrick died in August 2013, after spending 15 years in a wheelchair, following injuries sustained in an automobile accident which occurred June 1998. [10]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Court of Appeal of Uganda</span>

The Court of Appeal of Uganda is the second-highest judicial organ in Uganda. It derives its powers from Article 134 of the 1995 Constitution. It is an appellate court when hearing cases appealed from the High Court of Uganda. However, it has original jurisdiction when adjudicating matters relating to the constitutionality of matters before it. All judgments by the Court of Appeal are theoretically appealable to the Supreme Court of Uganda, if the Supreme Court decides to hear the appeal.

Simon Mugenyi Byabakama is a Ugandan lawyer and judge, on the Court of Appeal of Uganda, which doubles as the country's Constitutional Court. He was appointed to the court of appeal on 11 October 2015.

Keturah Kitariisibwa Katunguka,, also Ketrah Katunguka, is a Ugandan lawyer and judge who serves as a justice of the High Court of Uganda, since 11 March 2016.

Percy Night Tuhaise, is a Ugandan lawyer and judge who, on 8 February 2018, was appointed by president Yoweri Museveni, to the Uganda Court of Appeal which also doubles as the country's Constitutional Court. Prior to her current position she served on the High Court of Uganda.

Monica Kalyegira Mugenyi is a Ugandan lawyer and judge, who, on 4 October 2019, was nominated to sit on the Uganda Court of Appeal.

Ezekiel Muhanguzi is a Ugandan lawyer and judge, on the Court of Appeal of Uganda, which doubles as the country's Constitutional Court. He was appointed to that position by president Yoweri Museveni on 8 February 2018. Prior to his elevation to the Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court, Justice Muhanguzi served on the High Court of Uganda, retiring from there in February 2017, after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 65 years.

The High Court of Uganda, also Uganda High Court, is the third-highest judicial organ in Uganda, behind the Supreme Court of Uganda and the Court of Appeal of Uganda. It has "unlimited original jurisdiction", with powers to try any case of any value or crime of any magnitude. It is also mandated to hear all appeals from all Magistrates Courts. High Court judgements are appealable to the Uganda Court of Appeal.

Andrew Byabashaija is a Ugandan lawyer and judge on the High Court of Uganda. He was appointed to that court by president Yoweri Museveni on 17 June 2010.

Lydia Mugambe, is the Inspector General of Government (IGG) as of March 2022, a Ugandan lawyer who served as judge at the High Court of Uganda between May 2013 and September 2020. She was appointed to the High Court by President Yoweri Museveni, on 3 May 2013. Lady Justice Mugambe Ssali was subsequently appointed by President Museveni as Inspector General of Government on 18th September 2020

The Principal Judge is also responsible for supervising the Magistrates Courts below the High Court.
