Janeen Uzzell is an American global technology executive and CEO of the National Society of Black Engineers.
Uzzell was born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, where she attended Mount St. Mary Academy. [1] She has cited her family as an inspiration for her education and career. [2] Her father, Jay Uzzell, was a musician in the band The Corsairs, and her mother is Kate Uzzell. She earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina A&T State University [2] and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. [3]
Uzzell joined General Electric in 2002, focusing on healthcare technologies. In 2016, Uzzell took over the Women in Technology programs at General Electric. [2] Here she led the implementation of an ad campaign that showcased women engineers, including Mildred Dresselhaus. [2]
In 2021, after working for the Wikimedia Foundation as COO, Uzzell became CEO of the National Society of Black Engineers. [3]
Uzzell serves on the advisory boards for Mercy Ships [4] and as an advisor to the Believers in Business Collegiate Organization of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. [5]
The Network Journal named Uzzell one of its "40 Under Forty Achievers" in 2005 and one of "25 Most Influential Black Women in Business" in 2016. [6] She has received the General Electric African-American Forum's Icon Leadership Award. [6]

Beatrice Alice Hicks was an American engineer, the first woman engineer to be hired by Western Electric, and both co-founder and first president of the Society of Women Engineers. Despite entering the field at a time where engineering was seen as an inappropriate career for a woman, Hicks held a variety of leadership positions and eventually became the owner of an engineering firm. During her time there, Hicks developed a gas density switch that would be used in the U.S. space program, including the Apollo moon landing missions.
Mount Saint Mary Academy is a four-year private high school for girls, located in Watchung, in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. Located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, the school operates financially independent of the Diocese. The Academy was founded in 1908 by the Sisters of Mercy of New Jersey and opened with 77 students. A fire destroyed the main building in 1911, but the school reopened in the following year and has grown steadily. In the 1980s and 1990s it was a boarding school that housed local, out of state and international students.

General Electric Research Laboratory was the first industrial research facility in the United States. Established in 1900, the lab was home to the early technological breakthroughs of General Electric and created a research and development environment that set the standard for industrial innovation for years to come. It developed into GE Global Research that now covers an array of technological research, ranging from healthcare to transportation systems, at multiple locations throughout the world. Betty Lou Bailey was a General Electric Company mechanical engineer from the United States. She held a patent for an aircraft variable exhaust nozzle. The invention operated so that one would vary both the throat and the exit diameters for the hot gas flows. In honor of her legacy, the Society of Women Engineers named a scholarship after her. To date, that scholarship is still being distributed to eligible female graduate students who pursue a career in engineering.
Margaret Keane was the chief executive officer of Synchrony from February 2014 through April 2021. She transitioned to the role of executive chair of Synchrony’s board of directors.
