Doping ban
After the 2006 South Asian Games held in Colombo, she was tested positive for nandrolone. She gave two urine samples. Both contained high level of nandrolone. The A sample contained 27.5 ng/ml and the B sample contained half as much as the A sample. However, the tolerance for doping by the world anti-doping body WADA is only 2 ng/ml. She was suspended pending further enquiries.
The head of disciplinary committee of the South Asian Games, Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, delivered the controversial ruling at a news conference held at the National Sports Medicine Institute in Sri Lanka. Despite Silva guilty of taking a banned anabolic steroid nandrolone, she was cleared of all charges, because the "chain of custody" of the medical investigation was not coordinated properly. Despite the medical committee stating that urine sample A contained a very high percentage of nandrolone and a high concentration like that can only go to blood by injection form, Silva was cleared of the charges and allowed to continue athletics. The decision was then overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and she was handed a two-year doping ban. [4] The ban ran from 14 April 2008 to 13 April 2010. [4] She was also disqualified from all results from 25 August 2006. [4]
Linford Christie is a Jamaican-born British former sprinter and athletics coach. He is the only British man to have won gold medals in the 100 metres at all four major competitions open to British athletes: the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games. He was the first European athlete to break the 10-second barrier in the 100 m and held the British record in the event for close to 30 years. He is a former world indoor record holder over 200 metres, and a former European record holder in the 60 metres, 100 m and 4 × 100 metres relay.
Deshabandu Kameradin Susanthika Jayasinghe is a Sri Lankan retired sprinter, who specialised in the 100 and 200 metres. She won the Olympic silver medal for the 200m event in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, the second Sri Lankan to win an Olympic medal after Duncan White and the first Asian woman to win an Olympic or World Championship medal in a sprint event. She is also the only Asian athlete to have claimed an Olympic medal in sprint events. She is also the first and only Sri Lankan to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. Her silver medal achievement at the 2000 Sydney Olympics also stood as the only Olympic medal for a South Asian in athletics event for 21 years before Neeraj Chopra's gold medal achievement at the 2020 Summer Olympics. She is fondly nicknamed as the Asian Black Mare. She has represented Sri Lanka at the Olympics on three occasions in 1996, 2000 and 2008. She is considered one of the most decorated sprinters in Sri Lanka. However, she is also a deemed as a controversial figure in Sri Lanka.
Ekaterini Thanou, also known as Katerina Thanou, is a Greek former sprinter. She won numerous medals in the 100 metres, including an Olympic silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, while she was the 2002 European champion in Munich, Germany. She had also been crowned world and European champion in the 60 metres at the indoor championships.
Tatyana Viktorovna Lysenko is a Russian hammer thrower. Her career has been blighted by repeated doping infractions. In February 2019, the Court of Arbitration for Sport handed her an eight-year ban for doping, starting from 2 July 2016.
Competitors at the Olympic Games have used banned athletic performance-enhancing drugs.
The 14th IAAF World Championships in Athletics was an international athletics competition held in Moscow, Russia, from 10 to 18 August 2013. Initially, Russia won the most gold medals to top the table for the first time since 2001. It was also the first time ever the host nation took the top of the medal table. However, following the disqualification of Russian sprinter Antonina Krivoshapka for doping and after the redistribution of medals in the Women's 4 × 400 metres relay, the United States moved to the top of the medal table with eight golds. In the overall medal count, the United States won 26 medals in total, followed by Kenya with 12. With 1,784 athletes from 203 countries it was the biggest single sports event of the year. The number of spectators for the evening sessions was 268,548 surpassing Daegu 2011.
The 2006 South Asian Games were held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 18 August to 28 August 2006, in the Sugathadasa Stadium with more than 2000 sportspersons competing in the record 20 disciplines of Sports.
Chinthana Geetal Vidanage is a Sri Lankan weightlifter. He won a gold medal in the men's 62 kg category weightlifting; the first weightlifting gold medal for Sri Lanka in the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Australia. In, 2011 Vidanage was banned for four years for violating anti-doping rules.
Sadaf Siddiqui is a Pakistani track and field sprint athlete from Lahore who has competed in international sprint races for Pakistan. Siddiqui represented Pakistan at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where she competed in 100 meter, placing seventh in her heat without advancing to the second round.
Sunita Rani is an Indian athlete from Punjab who won a gold medal in the 1,500 m race and a bronze in the 5,000 m during the 2002 Asian Games. Her time of 4:06.03 in the 1,500 metres is the current Indian national record. She received the Arjuna award in 1999 and the Padma Shri in 2015 for her achievements. She later raised controversy when she was charged with doping. Her medals were revoked but subsequently reinstated after an investigation.
Nevin Yanıt is a Turkish former sprinter specializing in high hurdling.
At the 2006 South Asian Games, the athletics events were held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 23 August to 27 August 2006. A total of 35 events were contested, of which 20 by male and 15 by female athletes.
Manju Dinesh Kumara Wanniarachchi is a Sri Lankan amateur boxer. He won a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the bantamweight category, defeating Sean McGoldrick in the final, but was later stripped of his medal after failing a drug test. He is an old boy of Vidyartha College, Kandy.
Sean McGoldrick is a Welsh professional boxer who has held the British and Commonwealth bantamweight titles since February 2023. As an amateur he was awarded the gold medal for the Bantamweight division at the 2010 Commonwealth Games
The athletics competitions at the 2012 Olympic Games in London were held during the last 10 days of the Games, on 3–12 August. Track and field events took place at the Olympic Stadium in east London. The road events, however, started and finished on The Mall in central London.

This resulted in 465 medal sets being distributed.
Anoma Sooriyaarachchi, also spelt as either as Anoma Sooriyarachchi or Anoma Suriyaarachchi, is a Sri Lankan-based track and field athlete who competes in women's 100m, 200m, 4 × 100 m relay and long jump events. She is a Sri Lankan national and Asian record holder in women's 100-yard dash event. She obtained the British citizenship during her early career which was at the half way mark as a track and field athlete and now currently lives in Wales.
