Janice C. Stork is an American politician,businesswoman,and member of the Democratic Party. [1] Stork was elected as the first female Mayor of Lancaster,Pennsylvania,on November 7,1989,defeating Republican challenger,Mary Lou Broucht. [2] [3] Stork,who had previously served on the Lancaster City Council,served as Mayor for two,consecutive four-year terms from January 1990 until January 1998.
Stork narrowly won re-election to second term in November 1993. [4] She defeated former Lancaster County Commissioner Brad S. Fischer,by only 255 votes,or 2.2%,the second-closest mayoral election in the city's history. [4]
She retired from office in January 1998 and was succeeded by Republican Mayor Charlie Smithgall.

He is credited with spearheading several major infrastructure and redevelopment projects throughout Lancaster,including the conversion of the then-vacant Watt &Shand department store into the Lancaster County Convention Center and Marriott Hotel,as well as the construction of Clipper Magazine Stadium,the main Queen Street Station of the Red Rose Transit Authority,and Binns Park.

At least three special elections to the United States Congress were scheduled as either deaths or vacancies arose. The Democratic Party retained control of the governorship in Kentucky,flipped the Wisconsin Supreme Court and held a seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court,gained six seats in the New Jersey General Assembly,and won back unified control of the Virginia General Assembly,while Republicans also flipped the governorship in Louisiana and narrowly retained Mississippi's governorship. The election cycle also saw Ohio voting to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution and legalize cannabis for recreational use. The results were widely seen as a success for the Democratic Party.
