Japhet Killewo is a Tanzanian doctor and epidemiologist in Kagera, Tanzania. He was the former Chair of Tanzanian Public Health Association and currently an epidemiology professor at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). [1] His research area focuses on HIV/AIDS epidemiology research in Kagera region in Tanzania. [2] As a clinician, he also focuses on AIDS control and mother-to-child intervention in Tanzania. [2] As a scholar, he publishes actively in international journals and participated in many projects across the globe, which are organised and supported by the European Union, as well as World Bank and USAIDS. Education

Japhet Killewo received his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Makerere University, [3] Masters from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and PhD from Umea University in Sweden. [4]

Career

Killewo started his career as a district medical officer after graduated from Makerere University from 1976-1980. [5] [4] After obtaining his masters from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in public health, he led the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at MUHAS from 1986-1997. [5] [4] During this period, he was also the Principal Investigator for Kagera AIDS Research Project (KARP), with an affiliation from Project SIDA. [5] In 1997-1999, he served as programme manage at MUHAS Programme Management Unit. After which, he went to Bangladesh to lead the Reproductive Health Programme, working for the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research (ICDDRB) under the World Bank, and a collaboration between MUHAS and Harvard T.H Chan, School of Public Health. [6] [7] In 2003, he returned to MUHAS to continue his career in teaching and research. Other than conducting research, he also serves as editors for numerous journals and co-authored the textbook that are used in the field of Public Health. In 2010, the book named "Epidemiology and Demography in Public Health", was published by Academic Press/Elsevier [8] and Killewo serves as the editor-in-chief. He also wrote a part of the book titled "International Encyclopedia of Public Health" [9]

Muhimbili National Hospital is a 1500-bed public teaching hospital located in Upanga West ward of Ilala District in Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania. It is the national referral hospital as well as academic and research facility for the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. It offers speciality care across the spectrum of clinical medicine. About 40% of its beds are for private patients. The hospital employs around 2705 workers including 328 doctors and 946 nurses.

Fred Nalugoda is a public health researcher studying HIV/AIDS in rural Uganda for over 20 years, mainly through surveillance and field work. He currently serves as the Program Director of a research station in Kalisizo in Uganda as part of his continued work at the Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP).

Fred Mhalu is a microbiologist and medical researcher from Tanzania. His main area of study revolves around infectious diseases and intervention. Ever since 1986, he has been a main contributor to the information about AIDS in Africa. As a co-coordinator of a Tanzanian-Swedish research collaboration called TANSWED, he was involved in many research projects that lead to multiple publications in medical journals. His more recent research on HIV/AIDS involves studying breast cancer in HIV prevalent areas, evaluating prevention of mother-to-child-transmission of HIV-1, and observing sexual behaviors of high risk populations for HIV-1.

Karithi Ruth Wanjiru Nduati is a Kenyan Pediatrician and Epidemiologist who also teaches at the University of Nairobi College of Health Sciences. She is also currently leading an interdisciplinary program through the University of Nairobi School of Medicine to educate physician-researchers to best implement HIV treatment and prevention methods backed by research. The program was funded by the Fogarty Training Grant which is a part of the PEPFAR funds the country of Kenya received.

Joseph Konde-Lule is a retired Ugandan medical sociologist and epidemiologist who conducted extensive work regarding HIV risk behaviors in rural Uganda.
