Jason Tovey (born 28 April 1989) is a retired Welsh rugby union player who played at fly-half. He has represented the Wales under-20.

Club career

Newport RFC

Tovey played junior and colts rugby for Risca RFC. Usually a fullback or fly-half, Tovey spent two years with the Dragons Academy, first playing at the age of 15 playing a full season at fullback for Newport RFC. At the age of seventeen and was then moved to fly-half.

Newport Gwent Dragons: 2008-2012

Tovey made his debut for Newport Gwent Dragons against the Ospreys in a Celtic League defeat on Friday 25 April 2008 [1] On 22 February 2009 he became the first Dragons player to score a hat-trick of tries in an official match, scoring 23 of the 26 points in the win over Ulster at Rodney Parade.

In May 2010 Tovey was voted Young Player of the Year at the Welsh professional players awards. [2]

Cardiff Blues: 2012-2013

On 23 March 2012, it was announced that Tovey would move to Cardiff Blues for the 2012–13 season. [3]

Return to the Dragons: 2013-2016

Tovey rejoined Newport Gwent Dragons for the start of the 2013–14 season. [4]

Edinburgh Rugby:2016-2018

In March 2016 Tovey joined Edinburgh Rugby on a 2-year deal. [5]

Return to the Dragons: 2018–2019

Tovey rejoined the Dragons for a third spell for the 2018-2019 season. He was released at the end of the season. [6]

Second stint with Cardiff: 2019–2022

Tovey once again joined Cardiff Rugby in 2019, following his release from the Dragons. [7] He retired at the end of the 2021–2022 season.

Ynysddu River Rats: 2022 - Present

Upon professional retirement Tovey joined his local team Ynysddu RFC. [8] Unfortunately he failed to consistently break into the 1st XV so opted to step back into the “River Rats” (Nickname for Ynysddu 2nd XV). Tovey fills in for Ynysddu 1st XV regular fly-half Jeremy Roberts when selection dictates.

International

Tovey was called up to the senior Wales squad for the tour of North America in 2009, [9] though he was later cut from the squad and put on stand by. [10] In June 2011 he was named the Wales national rugby union team 45-man training squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. [11]

Lyn Jones is a former Wales international rugby union player. Originally playing as a flanker, Jones subsequently became a coach. He played most of his playing career for Neath RFC and started his coaching career at the same club. Jones has coached professional clubs in Wales and England and, in 2018, became head coach of the Russian national rugby union team. He subsequently beame a coach with national rugby team of the Netherlands.

Adam Mathias Jones is a Welsh former professional rugby union player who played as a lock. He captained the Wales Under-19 team and earned his first caps for the Wales senior team as a replacement against England and Scotland in the 2006 Six Nations Championship. He began his career with Swansea RFC before a spell in England with Saracens and Harlequins, before returning to Wales with Cardiff RFC. At the start of the Welsh regional era, he signed for the Llanelli Scarlets and played for them for four seasons, before a seven-year spell with the Newport Gwent Dragons. He also made appearances for Llandovery RFC, Carmarthen Quins RFC, Cross Keys RFC and Newport RFC.

Richie Rees is a Welsh former international professional rugby union player. He played as a scrum-half. He is now the attack coach for Cardiff Rugby.

Nathan Brew is a former Welsh international rugby union player. Brew played in the centre and on the wing.

Aled Thomas is a Welsh rugby union player. A fly-half, who plays for the Scarlets in the Pro14.

Nick Macleod is a former professional rugby union player who played for Cardiff Blues, Sale Sharks and Newport Gwent Dragons. Primarily a fly-half, Macleod also played at Fullback.

Will Harries is a Welsh former international rugby union player. A wing or fullback, he played for the Northampton Saints, Bedford Blues, Newport Gwent Dragons, and most recently Ealing Trailfinders.

Robert Lewis is a Welsh rugby union player. Lewis primarily played for Newport Gwent Dragons, London Welsh RFC, and Birmingham Moseley. Lewis represented Wales at grade age levels, as well as in rugby sevens.

Tangaki Taulupe Faletau, commonly known as Toby Faletau but professionally as Taulupe Faletau, is a Welsh professional rugby union player for Cardiff Rugby in the United Rugby Championship and has represented the Wales national team for over 10 years. The back row forward played for Cross Keys RFC, Newport RFC and Newport Gwent Dragons in Wales before joining Bath in England in 2016. He joined present club Cardiff in 2022.

Patrick James Handley Leach is a rugby union player for Newport RFC and the Newport Gwent Dragons regional team. He usually plays at centre, but he has also played at fullback. Born in St Asaph, Flintshire, Leach began his career with Colwyn Bay RFC and joined Orrell RUFC after leaving school. He also played for Manchester Rugby Club and had trials with English Premiership side Worcester before joining Newport RFC in 2009. He received his first call-up to the Dragons side in May 2010.

Hallam Benjamen Amos is a former Welsh rugby union player who played for Cardiff Rugby and Newport Gwent Dragons. He mostly played as a wing, but he was also capable of playing at fullback and as a centre. Born in Stockport, England, he came through the Newport Gwent Dragons academy and made his professional debut for the region in October 2011 at the age of 17 years and 28 days, briefly making him the youngest player to appear for one of the four Welsh regional sides. After eight years with the Dragons, during which time he made 115 appearances, he moved to the Cardiff Blues in 2019.

The CCB Centre for Sporting Excellence was opened in May 2014. The CCB Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly, Wales, is a sports facility located in and run by Caerphilly County Borough Council, South Wales. The Centre's facilities include a FIFA 2 star 3G Football Pitch, an IRB 22 ratified 3G Rugby Pitch, 2 conference rooms, a strength and conditioning room, medical & first aid rooms, a community room, 2 grandstands; 1 on each pitch and 2 balconies overlooking both pitches for performance analysis purposes.

Alex Jeffries is a Welsh former professional rugby union player who played as a prop. He retired from rugby due to a neck injury in April 2023.
