Jatiya Press Club is the professional club for journalists of Bangladesh located in Segunbaghicha, Dhaka.
The Jatiya Press Club was founded in 1954 as the East Pakistan Press Club. It was formed to be run by an elected committee guided by its rules and regulations. The Government of East Pakistan rented out a building at 18, Topkhana Road, Segunbagicha at a monthly rent of Tk 100 to be used as the press club headquarters. The building before 1947 was a residential house of Dhaka University and was once residence to physicist Satyendra Nath Bose. [2]
The first life member of the club was N. M. Khan who was chief secretary of the provincial government. Mujibur Rahman Khan was the first president of the club. On 25 March Pakistan army started Operation Searchlight and shelled the club, the structure was completely destroyed. After the Independence of Bangladesh it was named the National Press Club. In 1977 the building was leased to the club permanently and the government of Bangladesh covered the expense of a new building. In 1995 the club's logo and emblem were selected. [2]
From 2018 to 2020, Saiful Alam was the President and [3] the general secretary was Farida Yasmin, the first woman general secretary of the Jatiya Press club. [4] [5] Farida Yasmin was elected president in 2020, the first woman president of the Jatiya Press Club, and Elias Khan was elected general secretary. [6] Farida Yasmin was re-elected president of the Jatiya Press Club and Shyamal Dutta was elected general secretary. [7] On 12 August 2024, A section of Jatiya Press Club's managing committee revoked memberships of its president Farida Yasmin, general secretary Shyamal Dutta and managing committee member Shahnaj Siddiqui Soma. The Jatiya Press Club offers journalists three kinds of membership, first is life membership, second is permanent membership for professional journalists and the third is associate membership for public relations personnel. Associate members do not get voting rights. The National Press Club currently has about 800 members. [2] The press club is managed by a 17-member executive council. [9]

In 1985, Rab and his followers left the party and formed a new party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD, known as JSD (Rab). He served as the Jatiya Sangsad Member from Lakshmipur-4 and the Minister of Shipping and later the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock during 1996-2001 of the first Sheikh Hasina Cabinet.
Ataur Rahman Khan was a Bangladeshi lawyer, politician and writer, who served as the chief minister of East Pakistan from 1 September 1956 – March 1958, and as the prime minister of Bangladesh from 30 March 1984 to 1 January 1985.
Fazlul Quader Chowdhury was a Bengali politician who served as the 5th speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan from East Pakistan. He belonged to Ayub Khan's Convention Muslim League. He was also the acting president of Pakistan from time to time when Ayub Khan left the country. His elder brother Fazlul Kabir Chowdhury was the leader of the opposition in East Pakistan assembly. Quader was preceded by Maulvi Tamizuddin Khan of Awami League.
Amena Begum, a former Member of Parliament of East Pakistan, was a Bangladeshi politician. She was instrumental in campaigning all over East Pakistan for the Six Point program of regional autonomy drafted by the Awami League, and on 7 June 1966, organized the general strike along with Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury. This strike was observed throughout the then East Pakistan and was the first major indication that an independent Bangladesh was imminent. She later took over as president of the Jatiya League. She died in Dhaka on 7 April 1989.
Rashed Khan Menon is a Bangladeshi politician. He is the president of Workers Party of Bangladesh and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Barisal-2, Dhaka-8 and Bakerganj-9 constituencies. He was the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Ministry of Education. Earlier, he served as the Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism.
A.Z.M. Enayetullah Khan was a Bangladeshi journalist and government minister. He founded the weekly newspaper Holiday and the daily newspaper New Age. He served in Ziaur Rahman's cabinet, first as minister of land administration and land reform from December 1977 to June 1978, and then as minister of petroleum and natural resources from July 1978 to October 1978.

Farida Yasmin is a Bangladeshi journalist, and former president of the Jatiya Press Club. She was the first female president of the National Press Club. Twice elected president of the press club, she was holding that position from the year 2020 to August 2024. She is a former senior journalist of The Daily Ittefaq and former general secretary of Bangladesh National Press Club. In 2017, she was elected the first female general secretary of Bangladesh Press Club. She has also been a former joint secretary of Jatiya Press Club.
Shafiqur Rahman is a Bangladeshi politician, physician and current emir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. He served as Jamaat's secretary general from October 2016 to November 2019. He was elected the Jamaat-e-Islami emir on 12 November 2019. He was former acting secretary general of the party. Before his being acting secretary general, he had been ameer (leader) of the Sylhet city branch of the party.
Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu was a Bangladeshi politician of the Jatiya Party and served as the Secretary General for two terms. He was a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-9 constituency at the 10th Jatiya Sangsad and the Chittagong-6 constituency at the 4th Jatiya Sangsad. He served as the Cabinet Minister for Energy during Ershad's regime in the 1980s. He was appointed an advisor to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in November 2013.
