Farida Yasmin (born 1 June 1963) [3] is a Bangladeshi journalist, and former president of the Jatiya Press Club. [4] [5] [6] She was the first female president of the National Press Club. [7] Twice elected president of the press club, she was holding that position from the year 2020 to August 2024. [8] She is a former senior journalist of The Daily Ittefaq and former general secretary of Bangladesh National Press Club. [9] [10] In 2017, she was elected the first female general secretary of Bangladesh Press Club. [11] [12] She has also been a former joint secretary of Jatiya Press Club.

Early life and education

Her father is Shakhawar Hossain Bhuiyan and her mother is Jahanara Hossain. She was the student of Shibpur Girls High School, Narsingdi. She passed SSC exam from Shibpur Girls High School and HSC exam from Eden Mohila College. Yasmin completed a master's from University of Dhaka. [13]

Career

Yasmin was elected joint secretary of the NPC in 2011, [14] and 2012. [15] [16] She is the joint secretary of South Asian Women's Media Forum and was a founding member of the forum. [17] [18] She spoke for keeping the age of marriage in Bangladesh at 18 for women. [19] She was shift in charge at The Daily Ittefaq. [20]

In 2016, Yasmin was made the vice-president of Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism Alumni Association. [21] She was elected general secretary of Jatiya Press Club on 1 January 2017, she was first female general secretary of the Jatiya Press Club. [11] She was re-elected to the post of general secretary of the Jatiya Press Club on 18 December 2018. [22] She is the editor and publisher of womeneye24.com. [23]

On 31 December 2020, Yasmin was elected president of Jatiya Press Club, the first woman to be elected president. [24] She received 581 votes while her rival, Kamal Uddin Sabuj, received 395 votes. [24] Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit opened an investigation into her accounts, and the accounts of other elected leaders of the Press Club, Dhaka Union of Journalists, and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists in September 2021. [25] She criticized the government for investigating elected leaders of the journalist community and questioned why an investigation without any complaints against the journalists. [26] [27] This was around the time the government was looking into the account of reporter Rozina Islam of Prothom Alo who had been arrested in May. [28] Yasmin had met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal criticizing the harassment of Rozina, sought her bail, and said, "We want justice, no one has the right to harass anyone (Rozina) like this". [29]

Yasmin was re-elected on 31 December 2022 with 567 votes while Kamal Uddin Sabuj received 401 votes. [30]

Yasmin was appointed to the women's reserved seat for Narsingdi by the Awami League in February 2024. [31] [32]

Saiful Alam is a Bangladeshi journalist. He is the former President of Bangladesh National Press Club. He is also the editor of Daily Jugantor.

Freedom of the press in Bangladesh refers to the censorship and endorsement on public opinions, fundamental rights, freedom of expression, human rights, explicitly mass media such as the print, broadcast and online media as described or mentioned in the constitution of Bangladesh. The country's press is legally regulated by the certain amendments, while the sovereignty, national integrity and sentiments are generally protected by the law of Bangladesh to maintain a hybrid legal system for independent journalism and to protect fundamental rights of the citizens in accordance with secularism and media law. In Bangladesh, media bias and disinformation is restricted under the certain constitutional amendments as described by the country's post-independence constitution.

On April 17, 2021, Rozina Islam, a senior female reporter of the Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo, went to the Health Ministry office in the Bangladesh Secretariat for COVID-19 related reporting. She was confined in the ministry for five hours and her cell phones were seized. She was allegedly harassed and assaulted during her detention at the secretariat. She was then arrested from the Ministry for alleged theft and taking photographs of sensitive state documents. Sibbir Ahmed Osmani, Deputy Secretary of the Health Services Division, filed a case against her around midnight of April 17, 2021 with Shahbagh police station under the Official Secrets Act. She was jailed in Dhaka Kashimpur Women's Central Jail amid widespread protests. A virtual hearing for her bail was held on May 20, 2021, later the court announced the decision would be delayed to May 23, 2021, and on that day she was granted a conditional bail after being imprisoned for 7 days.

Shyamal Dutta is a Bangladeshi journalist and editor of Bhorer Kagoj. He was the former general secretary of the Jatiya Press Club, the national press club of Bangladesh. He was the vice-chairman of Bangladesh Film Censor Board. He was also a member of the board of governors of the Capital Market Stabilization Fund.
