The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit is a government agency of Bangladesh responsible for investigating money laundering, suspicious transactions, and cash transaction reports. [1] [2] The unit works under Bangladesh Bank. [3] A F M Shahinul Islam is the chief of Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, who was previously the Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank.
The unit was founded as the Anti-Money Laundering Department of Bangladesh Bank in June 2002. The name of the department was changed to Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit on 25 January 2012 through the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. [4] Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering recommended the government to form the unit. [5] In 2015, the Government of Bangladesh announced plans to provide autonomy to the unit. [6] In 2016, the Bangladesh Bank confirmed the unit has been made autonomous. [7]
In September 2021, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit sent letters to banks requesting the bank details of 11 elected journalist leaders from Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, Dhaka Reporters Unity, Dhaka Union of Journalists, and the National Press Club. [8] [9] [10] The move was condemned by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party who described it as an tactic to scare journalists. [11]
On 24 January 2022, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit sought account information of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, a political opponent of Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. [12] [13] [14]
Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi economist, entrepreneur, politician, and civil society leader, who has been serving as Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh since 8 August 2024. Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. Yunus has received several other national and international honors, including the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010. Yunus is one of only seven people in the world to have received all of these awards.
Sheikh Hasina is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. She served in the position of prime minister for over 20 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Thus, she became the world's longest-serving female head of government. Her authoritarian regime ended in self-imposed exile following an uprising in 2024.
The Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, commonly known by its acronym DGFI, is the defense intelligence agency of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, tasked with collection, collation and evaluation of strategic and topographic information, primarily through human intelligence (HUMINT). As one of the principal members of the Bangladesh intelligence community, the DGFI reports to the Director-General under the executive authority of the head of government, the Prime Minister, and is primarily focused on providing intelligence for the Prime Minister, the Cabinet of Bangladesh, and the Armed Forces of Bangladesh.

In 2019, he was appointed as the minister of information and broadcasting for the fourth Hasina ministry. Mahmud is accused as one of the perpetrators of the July massacre. He is currently wanted by Bangladesh Police for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Student–People's uprising of 2024.
Sayeed Khokon is a Bangladeshi businessman, politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Dhaka-6 constituency. He was mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation from 2015 to 2020. He is the executive member of the Bangladesh Awami League Central Committee. His father, Mohammad Hanif, was first elected mayor of Dhaka City Corporation. He has been in hiding since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on 5 August 2024.
Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal is a Bangladeshi fugitive, at large since 5 August 2024, a member of the Awami League and one of the key perpetrators of the July massacre orchestrated and executed by Sheikh Hasina's toppled regime. He is wanted by the government of Bangladesh for crimes against humanity during the Student–People's uprising of 2024.
Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-12 and Chittagong-13 constituencies. He served as the Minister of Land at the Fourth Hasina ministry during 2019–2024.

Begum Para is the colloquial name of a neighborhood in Toronto, Canada primarily populated by upper-class Bangladeshis. The area is connected to several money laundering scandals in Bangladesh. These scandals arose in 2019–2020, when it started coming to light in various newspapers and the foreign ministry of Bangladesh found the connection of money launderers to the Begum Para where various real estate assets were purchased in Canada with dollars looted out of Bangladesh.

The leadership of Muhammad Yunus began on 8 August 2024 when he was sworn in as the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh by President Mohammed Shahabuddin. In August 2024, after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister and her departure to India following the Student–People's uprising, the key coordinators of the uprising announced that Yunus would be Chief Adviser of the interim government. The main pledge of this government is organise a constituent assembly to draft and adopt a new, inclusive, democratic constitution, ensuring the inviolability of human dignity.
