The Financial Express [1] is an English-language daily published from Dhaka, Bangladesh, established in 1993. [2] [3] As of 2021, it was the second largest English language newspaper in Bangladesh. [4] Its stories focus mostly on business and economic issues, including international economic news. [5]

The paper is owned by International Publications Limited. [6] Shamsul Huq Zahid is the current editor. [7]

History

The Financial Express was established in 1993 under International Publications Limited. [8] [9] Moazzem Hossain was the founding editor of The Financial Express. [10] [11] It has syndication agreement with Financial Times and Project Syndicate, based in Prague. [8]

On 27 January 1998, Financial Express Journalists Union went on strike after filing a dispute against the management under the Industrial Relations Ordinance, 1969 over outstanding payment to staff. [12]

The Financial Express with Standard Chartered Bank has an annual award program for best corporate social responsibility in Bangladesh. [13]

In August 2018, AHM Moazzem Hossain, founding editor of the paper, died in Square Hospital, Dhaka. [14]

The Financial Express news editor, Abdullah M Hasan, died on 17 July 2020 from COVID-19. [15] In May 2021, the executive editor of The Financial Express, Shahiduzzaman Khan, died from COVID-19. [16]

Awards

In 2010, Developing Asia Journalism Awards, based in Japan, gave awards to two journalists of The Financial Express, AZM Anas and Raihan M Chowdhury, for two reports published in the newspaper. [17]

In February 2016, Economic Reporters' Forum gave a gratitude award to Shamsul Huq Zahid, editor of The Financial Express. [18]

Syed Shamsul Haq was a Bangladeshi writer. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1966, Ekushey Padak in 1984 and Independence Day Award in 2000 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contributions to Bangla literature. His notable works include "Payer Awaj Pawa Jai", "Nishiddho Loban", "Khelaram Khele Ja", "Neel Dongshon" and "Mrigoya".

The Daily Star is a Bangladeshi English-language daily newspaper. It is by far the largest circulating English-language newspaper in the country. Founded by Syed Mohammed Ali on 14 January 1991, as Bangladesh transitioned and restored parliamentary democracy, the newspaper became popular for its outspoken coverage of politics, corruption, and foreign policy. It is considered a newspaper of record for Bangladesh. The newspaper has been described as having a "reputation for journalistic integrity and liberal and progressive views - a kind of Bangladeshi New York Times".

Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed was a Bangladeshi politician who served as a Member of Parliament and as the Minister of Social Welfare from 2001 to 2007. He was executed in 2015 for war crimes committed during the 1971 Liberation war of Bangladesh.

Comilla Victoria Government College is a government college in Comilla, Bangladesh. It is one of the oldest and most renowned colleges in Comilla as well as in the Chittagong division. The college is located beside of Ranir Dighi on 32 acres of land including its intermediate and honors section.

The 2012 ICT Skype controversy was the leaking of Skype conversations and emails between Mohammed Nizamul Huq, head judge and chairman of Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal, and Ahmed Ziauddin, a Bangladeshi lawyer based in Brussels. These conversations took place during the prosecution of the accused for alleged war crimes during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

Bangladesh Pratidin is a Bengali-language independent daily newspaper in Bangladesh. It was founded on 15 March 2010. Bangladesh Pratidin tops the list of highest circulated dailies in the country out of 345 newspapers published from Dhaka and elsewhere, the information minister told parliament 10 March 2014. Naem Nizam is the editor of Bangladesh Pratidin. Bangladesh Pratidin is a subsidiary of East West Media Group (EWMG), which is owned by Bashundhara Group. On behalf of EWMG, the publisher of the newspaper is Moynal Hossain Chowdhury.

National Sports Awards are given by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Government of Bangladesh for specific contributions in the field of games and sports. The award was introduced in 1976. As of 2011, total 175 sports personalities won the award.

Shahiduzzaman Selim is a Bangladeshi theatre, television and film actor. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actor in Negative Role for his performance in the film Chorabali (2012). He is currently the president of Actors’ Equity Bangladesh. In 2023 he performed in Priyotoma, which is the highest grossing Bangladesh film of all-time.

<i>Aynabaji</i> 2016 film by Amitabh Reza Chowdhury

Aynabaji is a Bangladeshi crime thriller film directed by Amitabh Reza Chowdhury and produced by Gousul Alam under the banner of Content Matters Production. The film was released on 30 September 2016 and received critical acclaim for its storytelling, cinematography, and performances. Aynabaji is considered a milestone in Bangladeshi cinema, and is commonly cited by critics as one of the best South Asian films of the 2010s and 21st century.

Amjad Hossain was a Bangladeshi film director, actor, scriptwriter and lyricist. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Director twice, for the films Golapi Ekhon Traine (1978) and Bhat De (1984). He also won Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2004 and Ekushey Padak in 1992.
