Javier Fernández Fernández (born January 7, 1948 in Mieres, Asturias) is a Spanish politician, mining engineer, and civil servant. He is the secretary general of the Federación Socialista Asturiana, the regional socialist party affiliated with the national Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).

Mieres Municipality in Asturias, Spain

Mieres is a municipality of Asturias, northern Spain with approximately 45,000 inhabitants. The municipality of Mieres is made up of the capital, Mieres del Camino and the villages of Baiña, Figaredo, Cenera, Loredo, La Peña, La Rebollada, Santullano, Santa Rosa, Seana, Ujo, Urbies, Valdecuna, Santa Cruz, Ablaña, Turón, Gallegos, Bustiello.

Asturias Autonomous community and province of Spain

Asturias, officially the Principality of Asturias, is an autonomous community in north-west Spain. It is coextensive with the province of Asturias, and contains some of the territory that was part of the larger Kingdom of Asturias in the Middle Ages. Divided into eight comarcas (counties), the autonomous community of Asturias is bordered by Cantabria to the east, by Castile and León to the south, by Galicia to the west, and by the Bay of Biscay to the north.

Fernández has served as the President of the Principality of Asturias since May 26, 2012, the result of a coalition government stemming from the 2012 Asturias General Council election held in March. A parliamentary pact was made between the PSOE and the centrist Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD). Fernández was elected president on May 23, 2012, [1] and took office three days later. He appointed five women and three men to his cabinet, including economist Dolores Carcedo as the Minister of Finance. [2]

The President of the Principality of Asturias is the head of government of the Spanish autonomous community of Asturias. The President is chosen by the General Junta of the Principality of Asturias, regional parliamentary institution.

Union, Progress and Democracy political party in Spain

Union, Progress and Democracy is a Spanish political party founded in September 2007. It is a social liberal party which rejects any form of non-Spanish nationalism, especially the separatist Basque and Catalan movements. The party is deeply pro-European and wants the European Union to adopt a federal system without overlap between the European, national and regional governments. Besides, the magenta party wants to replace the State of Autonomies with a symmetric and highly centralized, albeit still federal, system in Spain as well as substituting a more proportional election law for the current one.

He retained the Presidency after the 2015 election, but governing in minority only with the support of the United Left of Asturias.

United Left of Asturias

United Left of Asturias is the Asturian federation of the Spanish left wing political and social movement United Left. Manuel González Orviz is the current General Coordinator. The Communist Party of Asturias and Izquierda Abierta are the major members of the coalition.

On 1 October 2016, Fernández was named by PSOE to lead the party's caretaker committee, after the resignation of Pedro Sánchez as Secretary General. [3]

2016 PSOE crisis

The 2016 PSOE crisis was a political conflict within the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), starting on 26 September 2016.
